Midpipe + Downpipe

Hey guys, I see RX7 store selling Midpipe+Downpipe combo for 200+ dollars. However I saw some of the kit for under 100 bucks. These are no-name pipes. but I wonder whether these matter. What do you guys think?!

WanKeL FD RX-7 Jan 30, 2005 07:21 PM

you mean ebay's mid/downpipe combo, .. i also want to know if some of you guys have tried them..

A lot of the no name pipes won't fit well at all. Also, they give you paper gaskets which catch on fire. Not to mention that you will get zilch in product or technical support. Most of the time you get what you pay for.

WanKeL FD RX-7 Jan 30, 2005 07:23 PM

i'll just get Gotham racing's midpipe .. :)

humm, off road use only, what does that mean ? LOLLLLL

Actually, I got a 3" dp/mp combo off of ebay about 7 months ago. Manufactured by Megan Racing, Fitment was perfect and they were metal gaskets, not paper ones as goodfellafd3s mentioned. They work great and flow really well. So my experience was great, don't know about other ones though.

Thanks Jeff.
Did you feel the changes right away?

Quickfini Jan 30, 2005 07:58 PM

I've read online that if you buy the combo off ebay for ~$100, that you need to install both mp and dp at the same time, as the flanges don't mate with the oem cat flanges. From what i hear anyway.

I'll answer for him ;)

Hell yes you will feel the changes :D! We are talking some big time power gains, but at the expense of an apex seal's arch nemesis......boost creep! Be careful out there fellas, the stock internal wastegate is not your friend when it comes to managing boost on a low backpressure system

WHO Jan 30, 2005 08:50 PM

I've heard good things about Megan Racing too (which led me to find his web site http://www.meganracing.com/index.asp) but I ordered the mid pipe from gotham racing ...almost 2 months ago I might add... still waiting (o:

MakoRacing Jan 30, 2005 08:55 PM

I have the ebay dp+mp, it doesnt fit as well as brand names. so its up to u if u think its worth the extra $$$

Sickass7 Jan 30, 2005 09:30 PM

Mine fit perfect, others might not have got the same product or maybe I got the best of the bunch. I kept the stock exhaust to keep some backpressure until I get a power fc installed. You wouldn't believe how much I felt the change. Going from a clogged precat to straight pipes was night and day. I went on ebay and found the same guy I bought it from last time (drivingear) here is the ebay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...950789374&rd=1

Sickass7 Jan 30, 2005 09:32 PM

Most creep I ever got was to 11 psi also.

Sickass7 Jan 30, 2005 09:34 PM

I doubt just going dp to stock cat would work as quickfini suggested, I think the flanges might only meet to the mp.

WanKeL FD RX-7 Jan 30, 2005 09:44 PM

soooo... it is a good idea to buy this dp/mp combo... some say it fits, some say it don't fit, i'm confused a little bit...

I have a ebay's style downpipe (3inch), and HKS catback system

Sickass7 Jan 30, 2005 09:51 PM

I say to definitely go for it, I love it and am glad I didn't pay some outrageous price for a brand name piece of metal that wouldn't work any better than what I purchased. It already had the o2 bung and came with gaskets and a mirror like finish.

thanks alot for your comments Sickass7 :)

no prob, just want to help out the fellow 7 community. Be gentle when taking off the old precat , don't wanna round off the bolts or break em.

Me, too!
Your testimony is very helpful! I am going to try~!!

Thanks a lot.

Whats the difference between megan racing ebay dp+mp that cost $100 than Megan Racing store that cost $210?

Sickass7 Jan 31, 2005 12:05 AM

It's the same pipes, getting it from the site is more expensive than getting it from the ebay sellers because they get discount prices from buying it in bulk from megan racing I believe. The guy I bought it from is currently selling six dp/mp combos on ebay alone, and there's probably quite a few different sellers all selling the megan racing pipes. Both include gaskets, bolts, and the polished pipes so definitely go for the ebay sellers. I'm not trying to do a pitch for anybody I'm just wanting to save everyone some dough.

I got a diff set from ebay than sickass7 so that could be why mine didnt line us as well as his. But it still went together so its no biggy, im glade i saved the money.

I have adownpipe that is not installed yet and a midpipe which is on the car right now. I have heard stories about the boost creep and am going to reinstall the cat. Will the downpipe have a better HP gain than the midpipe? If i were to install both together, what wastegate/boost controller do you think would be good. I am leaning towards the Apex boost controller.

*car has not been driven in the last year so, boost creep is not a problem right now.*

Thanks in advance for any info.

The seller is right here in LA where I am, but he says I cannot pick it up. He charges 40 dollars for shipping!! Bummer, but I don't know......it just doesn't feel good when I have to pay 40 bucks for maybe 10 miles drive at the most.

I have to ponder on this. :( :(

RXASSASIN7 Jan 31, 2005 12:52 AM

what do you guys think any of the "store" named down pipes and midpipes are before they are given a name: they are no name pipes, not refering to hks, greddy, ect... refering to (rx7trix mp and dp) and (rx7store dp and mp) everyone just calls them buy the name of the rx7 shop they bought them from... in actuallity they are probably made by the same guy for the different rx7 shops. hell and who knows for all you know the ones on ebay could be made by the guy that made them for both the stores except hes selling them on his own account. just a thought- jason :)
