Metal / Aluminum AST for FD Part #

Does anyone have a part number for a metal AST i can give to someone at mopac, lordco etc. I know moroso makes one that fits but i dont know the exact sizing... My plastic one split in half at the seal, lol.

Im aware a few sites sell the same one.. i hate dealing with shipping and stuff, if i could get one locally that would be good

let me know. I hear mixed reviews on deleting the AST all together, read a few threads on here and diff sites about it

Jason 12-04-11 05:35 PM

Moroso is probably a universal part. I dont think there is another metal one other than the Pettit style AST that others sell.

JonnyQuestions 12-04-11 08:14 PM

Usually people go aftermarket or delete. I just switched to tri point's ast. I have a working stock one if you want it lol

twinsinside 12-04-11 11:52 PM

I don't recommend the petit one. The cap tends to crap out quickly, one of the coolant lines doesn't fit well, and it tends to leak.

The re-amemiya one is probably the best one you can get if you can find one. Fighters garage also made one, and from what I understand Dale Clark had something to do with the design or had some kind of input if my memory serves correctly.

There are some other folks on other rx7 forums that make them too if I'm not mistaken.

I have sold hundreds of Pettit AST's and maybe had problems with 1-2 of them. Nothing wrong with them.

JonnyQuestions 12-05-11 12:48 PM

I always wondered what filler rod they use tig welding these aftermarket ast. Hopefully it's a high temp resistant one

They are flimsy, they don't fit the lower fitting right, the top warps, and the barb fitting bends easily. Other than that, they are really nice :)

The Tri Point AST is a much better product. I have had both.

I know from first hand experience that the petit one is inferior in design, and unless they have a version 2 or something from the one I bought 5 years ago, I stand by my statement.

How many you have sold has nothing to do with the quality of the unit and everything to do with availability of options and people cheaping out.

How many different metal AST's do you sell? My guess is the same one most everyone sells: Petit.

I can't speak to the tripoint one but it sounds nice. I'll never have to worry about it though because the RE-A one I have is an incredible product.

Same here, my Fd came with an Pettit"s AST and had the problems as stated above. Got an RX7.com one and all is good.

One vote here for the OEM AST, latest revision (B) that uses a different plastic from the old version. Our '94's AST broke a nipple at 98K miles, and I replaced it with a new stock unit. The black case of the unit looked slightly different from the broken one, and I was told that info about the "B" revision by the parts guy.

If the Pettit was shit I wouldnt sell it. Fact is it works and the majority of people using it dont have an issue with it. I have installed many of them and used them on my personal cars with no problems. I'm sure the tripoint one works fine also.

FFWD_FD 12-06-11 12:00 AM

fighter garage used to make a really nice one, whatever happened to them?

The Pettit unit works fine when its new. The main problem is durability. The fact is that its flimsy. It just doesnt hold up to having the hoses and caps replaced several times. The metal bends too easily, then doesnt seal well. Maybe you should look into selling the Tri-Point AST instead of the Pettit.

There's also the RE-Amemiya one. I picked one up when I was there in 2003. :D

RHD has it: http://www.rhdjapan.com/re-amemiya-a...fd3s-13b-23644

Here's a bunch of different ones you can order:

Looks like a nice AST. A bit pricey at $262 plus shipping

tafkamb2 12-06-11 05:28 PM

Deleting it is a lot cheaper. But does anyone make an aluminum one?

BizarroTerl 12-06-11 06:16 PM

rx7.com and tri-point both carry aluminum ASTs.

Banzai-Racing 12-08-11 05:58 AM

We stock the Tri-Point AST. http://banzai-racing.com/store/93+_rx-7_AST.html

TurboMazdaSpeed 02-28-12 09:35 PM

Well, this is one late ass reply but i didnt feel like waiting for shipping, so i went to mopac and got a moroso one and made it fit. works REALLY good! Too bad i didnt see that banzai one sooner though :) Got this one for 100 bucks though.. made the aluminum mounts myself. No problems or leaks, looks like it should holdup good for a long long time!

Fighter's Garage closed up shop unfortunately, but there are still some used ones floating around.

I REALLY don't like the Pettit AST design. Biggest is the nipples on the side, they're a touch too small so you have to use worm drive clamps and crank them down to get it to seal well. It's also VERY plain looking and the stamped steel radiator cap neck is flimsy. I also hate using those giant domestic radiator caps, I'd rather it be the smaller stock caps.

I haven't personally messed with the Tripoint, so I can't vouch for anything there.

There were also some guys in Australia years back that were making a cast aluminum AST that was an exact copy of the stocker, just in aluminum. It was VERY nice and reasonably priced but it's no longer made and I don't think I've ever seen one spoken of or on someone's car.

I have an RE-Amemiya AST to go on my car at some point, the quality is top notch and fit and finish are exceptional as I would expect.

Getting a new stock AST is also an option, but every time you pop your hood at an RX-7 get-together or post a pic you'll get a million fingers pointing at it. Maybe just paint it silver and say it's aluminum :).

I've run my car with no AST for YEARS now, I have had ZERO overheating problems. Mind you I don't run it on a track or anything, but really it's not totally necessary. Also, if you use the Lisle funnel to fill your cooling system and properly get the air out that goes a long way.

Really, I just plan on putting one in when I re-do my intercooler setup just because I like the RE-A AST and it looks neat, no other reason.

Dale

I've never had any kind of problems with my Fighter's Garage AST.
It's anything BUT flimsy, mounted easily, looks shiny, and cured the babbling brook behind my dash.

RX7.com only sells the Pettit AST

prrex4ever 02-29-12 07:50 PM

Not the one I got from them. Their shop is 10 minutes away from my job and the Pettit I took off the car is quite different from the one they sold me.
