Megan Racing AST?

Good moring fellow members,

I just came accross this megan racing coolant part, which to me it looks like a AKA: Air Separator Tank. MSRP is considerably lower compared to other AST on the market. Has anyone had experience w/them or could chime in on it?

Part numbers are:

MR-BT-B (for Blue)
MR-BT-B (for Red)

Here is the link...

No experience with the product but it looks like it could be made to work. It has a 1.1kg/cm^2 pressure cap, not sure how that compares to the OEM. Also it appears to have one extra port that the FD AST doesn't so you'd have to plug that up. And clearly it's not custom fit so you'd have to build a bracket.

I think the OEM pressure cap is .9kg,s o you may need a different cap. A common problem with cheaper ASTs is that they tend to warp and the cap looses pressure. I bought a used RE-Amemiya one and I've heard great reviews about it. This is a part, that if it fails, you can blow your engine....

you can find used Pettit AST's on here for cheap, I got mine for like 30 shipped.

$30! That is a good price, I guess is all about timing.

SpooledFD3S 03-26-13 04:51 PM

sorry it was actually $60 lol

What a bait and switch!!:lol::lol:

I think I got my Pettit one for like $70 shipped.

Once I got it we promptly cut holes into it, welded on a couple -4 bungs, a -16 bung, and a 3" pipe.

After that we just used the AST in place of my T-stat housing :icon_tup:

I have been thinking of picking up a JDM STi EJ20K coolant expansion tank as they are all metal and look oem, but also nice.

I currently have Pettit ast and it doesn't work with the stock looking theme I have going on in the engine bay (okay, its pretty much stock in there besides an bed liner'ed SMIC and Efini Y pipe).

ChromeThunder 03-26-13 09:17 PM

Huh, that looks different. I didn't even know there was a different OEM AST.

I just noticed I jacked up the part numbers.

MR-BT-B (for Blue)
MR-BT-R (for Red)

And somewhere I found a polished/silver one MR-BT-P (for Polished)

Going back to what DDagman said, I am curious of quality from Megan Racing. Personally I haven't heard anything bad about them yet. I must point out they are well respected for good aftermarket products for BMWs. In fact I've met some people that say they make quality products for their M3. Actually I just ordered a set Megan Racing tow links for my FD. I hope those are good! (Fingers crossed)

I would recommend the one Banzai sells on their website. I just picked one up recently and was blown away by the quality of it. It's black anodized brushed aluminum and the welds look great. Banzai also shipped it out super fast and threw in a mouse pad too.

btw, it comes with a 0.9 bar cap which is the correct one to use.

I had a Pettit AST. Fitment was poor, and it's made of thin metal that warped and didnt seal. It caused me all kinds of problems before I realized it was warped. It is NOT a good product.

Tri Point Engineering makes a good quality AST. I have had it for about 3 years with no problems. I highly recommend it:

AST - 93-95 RX-7 Tri-Point Engineering AST

Actually, i'm pretty sure the AST Banzai sells is made by Tri Point Engineering. So either way, you can't go wrong ordering from Banzai or directly from Tri Point.
