mega squirt????
i have heard all the talk of the PFC or wat ever its called as a piggy back to the ecu, but is the mega squirt a viable option to upgrade to the stock ecu. according to its makers it is setup to run anywhere up to 20 psi.
i mean personally i would rather spend the 2 hundred and build the darn thing than pay more if i can get away with it. Give me your opions please. |
I don't think they make that for the FD. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

pfc is not a piggy back ecu. its a stand alone. what are your plans for the car?. if tuning is an issue you may want to go with a pettit ecu.

hmm i want to run higher than 12 psi and i already know about the IC issue and the cooling. so yes tuning will be an issue. you said pettit ecu? what are the cost and pros and cons, if you could.

In my opinion, the Megasquirt is not for someone who wants a cheap ECU. The megasquirt is for someone who wants to learn more about how engine controls work, and is already pretty good with their hands. I wouldn't even think about it unless you're the type of person that can wire up stereos in their sleep, and already have a pretty good understanding of how air/fuel ratios, ignition timing, and wastegate controls work together to make the engine run well.
Also, be aware that nobody has gotten a Megasquirt to work with an FD yet. The twin-turbo control system is pretty complicated, and people seem to be having trouble using the FD's crankshaft sensors also (the dual Variable Reluctance sensor is different from other year RX-7's, from what I've heard). People have installed Megasquirts on turbocharged FC's, that might be a better place to start. -s- |

the megasquirt is a DIY 'standalone" EMS, you build it to suit your needs. supposedly it can be run on any car if you put in the work to set it up, which is why it is the cheapest 'standalone' available. |

ya i heard couple of good things about it, but i think i ll be the first one (in my area at least) to get it running in my fd friend of mine says he can do it even though i have told him it works in fc but not in fds.

People have installed Megasquirts on turbocharged FC's, that might be a better place to start. -s- o one more thing. what is a good ecu option as far as tuning. i would prefer not to have to go to a dyno every time i needed to tune. is there any way to simply plug in a laptop and change some settings? and if so what about difficulty, can you teach yourself? again this isnt out of lazyness im just curious. |

i had megasquirt on my fiat uno turbo (was runnign around 180 bhp from a 1.4cc 8 valve engine and a t3 with hks external wastgate.
i int build it, bought it ready built but had to make my wiring loom fit the MS ecu pins which was a complete mission!!! the forum on the MS is really good an theres people who will help you as much as they can. personally with an engine as tempermental to the slighest current differnce to the ignition like the rotary (which even blow up with professional tuning with pfc's (see this or last months banzai mag - sweet yellow fd) i would try the MS unless u have money to burn.i wa considering using MS, then thought - shiiiit it was hard enough to do get the ignition and the right fueling setup on a car with only a basic ecu go tried and tested, sod doing it on an fd!! so i have now bought a pfc. (mind you, it was tres cool cruising around with my laptop hooked up to my MS, showing all the engine readouts and guages etc etc and people asking all the questions about it) |

There is a guy in Cincinnati who claims that he can program a megasquirt for an fd. I forget who it was but he said to get it right I had to pull the engine and put it on an engine dyno. He wanted about 2k for the whole process. I am going with a pfc this spring.
