Mazdaspeed Rear Big Brake Kit

I'm new to this thread and wanted to know if anyone has any feedback on SRMotorsports' Mazdaspeed rear big brake kit? it has the e-brake function and is like a smoky black color

Roto7FD 03-02-07 06:25 PM

Check out the good guy bad guy section, there is a few threads on SR, bad ones.....don't buy from them.

GoodfellaFD3S 03-02-07 06:33 PM

It's simply the 99 spec rear brake kit, go check out the FDNewbieImports section here on the forum if you want to buy it from a reputable seller.

Some info on SR for ya here:

i e-mailed newbie 2wice but never got a reply from him. i basically wanted to know if it was a good product and if SRMotorsports was a reputable mechanic. i really don't care about price. a good rx7 mechanic is getting harder and harder to find these days

DomFD3S 03-02-07 08:08 PM

I would recommend asking the NorCal guys where they take their cars for service.

hahahha. He takes a long time. I am 3.5 weeks later. RAMMMMMMMMMMMY

Ramy may take awhile to get to you, but he's worth the wait. You'll get your parts from a trustworthy source.

I'm an old-schooler here, and SR has ripped-off a few people on these boards before (PowerFC related). I'm sure you could search for them if you really wanted to.

Mister Destiny 03-03-07 06:20 PM

i've dealt with quite a few vendors and few seem to be "reputable" in the sense that they take forever to find/ship the products they say they have in stock...return e-mails...i just take it as the 'rx-7 tax' and bear with them. But if someone is blatantly ripping someone off then they should be called on it. I've been to SRM and talked to a guy named Greg and he seemed pretty knowledgable about every question i asked. And i can tell if they hesistate and then shoot me BS just so they have an answer

Trout2 03-03-07 08:48 PM

You can get the same thing from N-Tech or the Rx-7 Store with better service and prices.

It's not a tax, it's just how things are when you decide to modify any car and deal with aftermarket vendors. Always assume it will take 2-3x longer and be surprised when you get a part sooner.

I've found SR to have some of the highest pricing on parts available from many sources.

As others have said, those are just the 99-rear OEM brakes...you can get them from a number of sources, Mazda Motorsports being the best (just have to run 2 auto-x/year to be a member).

^Their prices...FWIW:
RZ (99) rear calipers @ $260 each
RZ (99) rear rotors @ $120 each.

dopefishlives 03-03-07 11:43 PM

Damn $260 a caliper?! That is insane! ...nevermind, we are talking about FD's afterall. :)

Does anyone have a pic of these installed, I'm curious now how different they are from the Series 6/7 ones. Are they twin piston, that'd be a big improvement IMO.

I've been thinking about this for awhile, does it have to be a SCCA sanctioned event to count? I don't run in SCCA due to their events been so far from me geographically, instead I attend the monthly MSCC (Martin Sports Car Club).

No, they are exactly the same as the 93-98 rear caliper except the mounting bracket is extended to account for the larger rotor (12.4 vs 11.6"). $260 is not expensive for an OEM caliper in my experience....especially considering that it's a low volume JDM market-only part.

Sgtblue 03-04-07 06:39 AM

It may not be an issue, but don't forget that you'll need 17" wheels or larger for those brakes. .

mirabile, the reason is simple. Everyone on my staff - myself included - has a very demanding full-time job, yet we have a passion for FDs and the JDM market, so we do this as much as possible as time allows. We're actually seriously looking into opening a full-service shop and making this a full-time thing, but for the time being, I ask for your understanding and patience. When my hobby and career conflict, my career *must* come first, every single time.

Nameless, thanks for the kind words. I know you're still waiting on a reply from me too

Rynberg, I'm not second guessing you, but I'm curious who (if anyone) actually had the Mazdaspeeds and compared them to the 99s/RZs? I just never read that comparison anywhere; I've only seen people describe them (second-handedly) as being identical. Curious who finally did the comparison in the first place?

Re: the 99spec/RZ brakes, I've gotten a ton of inquiries on those, so I may (finally) be running a GB on 'em shortly if anyone's interested (including all the misc. associated parts).

Thanks!

Timing always seems to be crucial for me, but I'd be interested if you can best the prices from MAZDAMOTORSPORTS. :)

Jim, I don't try and compete w/ MazdaComp, because a) that source isn't intended for commercial use; it's to support Mazda racers, and b) not everyone has a MazdaComp account, so not everyone can source the parts for those prices. As such, it's not a fair/realistic price to compare against.

LOL, fair enough, but it was worth a try. I have my eye on a couple of things from your site, so you'll probably get my money anyway. ;)
