Mazda Specific JDM Diagnostic Tool

Anyone tried/seen/heard-of one of these tools before? Seems pretty cool. Wonder if it will work on USDM cars (I think so?).

Tempted to try it.

Seen something similar while browsing YAJ. Havent tried though.

We at MX5TECH across the pond make a diagnostic tool for old Mazdas, originally made for the NA Miatas but also supports FD RX7s.

Home Page - MX5 Tech

We plan to join the forum as a Vendor very(!) soon to launch a new product!

Apologies if not allowed to advertise before officially signed up.

@Jimaha
Don't go waving it around, and you'll be fine. Seems like a cool product. PM me if you'd like to open a GB or become a forum vendor. The fees are very reasonable. A group buy could be a good step to get the word out, for minimum spend commitment.

Nice! Looks like a neat product.

FYI some of the functionality will be limited if you don't have a stock ECU. But, some things like the fan test, switch test, fuel pump test, O2 sensor, etc. should work.

I'm going to go ahead and order one!

Keep us updated on how it performs. Looks nifty!

Yep! Dale (as always) is correct, functionality will be limited with an aftermarket ECU.

We had originally planned to contact Dale to see if he was willing to test a review unit as well as our other new product before launching on the site. As far as I am aware it has never used on a US-SPEC RX-7. We will refund Dale and send him a review unit if he's okay with that. If you are interested we advise you not to order until he can confirm it works, we see no reason why it shouldn't but we would like to confirm it before telling you how amazing it is :P We own a stock 2000 RX-7 but have only had a chance to confirm Engine and ABS codes work before pulling the engine to replace the twins.

Sounds great, we should be ready very soon!

This looks like a great product, planning to order one for my stock ECU car!

Thanks James. I'll give it the full test when it arrives and see how it does! I'm interested to see how it works with the PowerFC, not really sure if any of the factory diagnostic functions are supported on the PowerFC and the only way to find out was with Mazda's DTS-1000 tester which is unobtanium at this point.

Yeah that would be good information to know, any feedback is greatly appreciated. Only know of one person who privately owns the fabled Mazda DTS, never seen it in person though!

it was $10,000 in 1992!

We've had some results back from an early RX-7 UK owner, which has unfortunately confirmed that the diagnostics signals are slightly different from the Miatas. This means we are going to have to tweak the circuit to make it compatible. The good news is it has a lot more data available to read for an updated model.

It would be really useful to confirm the USA ECU uses the same signals as the UK. Would it be possible for someone to take a couple voltage measurements on a stock ECU. The measurements we need are between GND and FEN, and then between B+ and FEN, with ignition on.

If anybody has an oscilloscope, it would be interesting to know if there is any waveform on the FEN pin with the ignition on. ...If not i'll probably have to buy an early RX-7...shame xD

Thanks for any help,

James

I'm going to see if I can do this but I'll have to get on a friend's FD that has a stock ECU.

Interesting that the signals are different. I thought most of them were just on/off pins (ie you can jumper two pins to kick the fuel pump on)

I have the tools to check it out I think, but I currently have a PFC installed. If I get a chance to put the stock ECU back in and poke around on it I will post the results up.

Did some investigation this afternoon in the lab, we managed to hack our current diagnostic tool so it could impersonate the DTS-1000. This is our first result, looks promising.
