bye bye rotary, not that it will really be missed. the renesis was a flop and the older 13B engines are gaining non mazda support to keep them afloat for years to come.
would think they would learn over the years but they just trade 1 mistake for another. |
I still think they are designing a super high compression "Skyactive" rotary from scratch.

I would like to see Mazda produce a 2, 3 & 4 rotor hydrogen burner engine that would produce 100hp per rotor... Put the 2 rotor in the mx-5 miata, a 3 rotor in a "newly" produced and "updated" 3rd gen and a 4 rotor in a "whats next" rx-7 prototype...

yes, it is actually a great design for a generator, so maybe in some sort of hybrid fashion but not as a super high compression hydrogen or gas burning engine as the main power plant. if they could figure out a way of harnessing it's RPM capability rather than trying to make use of it for varying RPMs and loads. the higher the engine spins the better it internally seals and it's VE goes up, it's also the easiest engine to convert into a modular design. although mazda never incorporated extending the engines it could easily be adapted to attach more and more rotors.

The biggest hurdle would be emissions, then reliability, MPG, low end torque, price. Direct injection 16X in a Miata may be a good come back. This isn't the economy for a high priced sports car. A supercharged rotary Miata "Mazdaspeed track edition" would be nice if they could do it for $20k less then the 370Z and reach at least 285HP like the base Porsche Boxster. Even A high MPG, low emission, low price NA version would be a winner.

I would not mind a small compact turbo charged V6 with overhead cams as long as it revs to 8000+. The FD is a great overall design that can be still great with various other engines.
