massive pressure in radiator, blows all coolant out of reservoir...

hello all,
i am having a serious problem with my 94 fd. as soon as i start it up, my coolant starts blowing all over the ground from the reservoir... i checked the radiator and hoses everything flows fine. the reservoir isnt broken, it just purges it out of the reservoir. there is tremendous pressure in the cooling system, like when i shut the car off you can here the coolant gurgling like as if it were being boiled out. i just bought an oem coolant cap with the spring on it. and a brand new thermostat oem also and new water pump.... the car is not hot or anything. sounds like air is all over in the lines though. i don't know what the hell is going on.
anything helps
thanks guys
-Jessie

Make sure the cap with the spring is on the air separation tank, not the filler neck above the water pump. Blowing coolant out the reservoir tank is a classic symptom of coolant o-ring failure. Search the forum for 'champagne test'.

Do a test like this and see what happens:

Like Majik said, it sounds like your coolant seals have been blown. The exhaust gases are being pushed into the water jacket causing the radiator to become pressurized with exhaust gases. This makes the overflow and coolant cap to think the car is overheating. Time for an engine rebuild.

Contact a good builder for an engine overhaul. Have @ $5G's ready to throw down.

dang, i was really hoping it wasn't that. i just bought the engine from tigerjapaneseautoparts.com and said everything was ok with it. i didn't even get to drive it for a week. the engine cost me 3450.00 and i am going to see if i can get my money back. (im really hoping, but doubtful) he said there was only 30,000 miles on it.
i am goin to maybe try and pick up a rebuilt one on here and just use it while i rebuild my pos thats in it now if they don't take it back.
i don't really know what im getting into with the rotary rebuild if i do it, but i would love to learn. (sorry for the whole life story)
i am goin to look around for a new engine and tranny (i think it's bad too.:wallbash:) i dont have alot of money right now, so this poor car might be sitting for a while....:tear:
thanks guys. i really appreciate it.

jlc,

Make sure the cooling system is burped properly first. Try this:

Did you pay $3,450.00 for the longblock (engine + tranny) or just the shortblock. Seems a bit much for even a longblock. I woulda run the compression and coolant pressure test before having it installed in the car... oh well, hindsight is always 20-20... like waking up in the morning after you paid for an overnight escort.

run a compression test after the coolant pressure test. read the faq thread about new/normal/rebuild now type compression readings... good luck!

AND DON'T TAKE THE FD TO A ... (gasp) DEALER!

ima add my 2 cents and say coolant seals as well, just replaced mine a couple months ago and it was doing the same thing

Why is your quote so high just for a rebuild? Are you quoting from N.A.S.A price list?

GoodfellaFD3S 09-19-08 07:44 PM

Exactly why I never recommend JDM motors to customers......

Banzai-Racing 09-20-08 05:27 AM

J-specs are simply engines that are from JDM Junkyards. Rule of thumb is that they should never be installed without rebuilding first. In your case you are most likely going to need a replacement iron. The coolant seal failure is most likely due to retaining wall erosion. This happens a lot on j-specs as they sit in junkyards and rot from the inside out.

sorry to hear man.

jlc 09-20-08 04:46 PM

i ordered the whole front clip of a 93. for the 3,450.00 i really hope it is just the coolant seals. but i checked into pineapple racing for the "13B-REW heavy duty internal seal & spring rebuild kit Price $1,240.00" http://www.pineappleracing.com/index...TS&Category=32 i was wondering if this is worth the money and if it is good quality?
or
from atkins rotary for the master rebuild kit is 1,175.00 http://www.atkinsrotary.com/index.php?pag=5
i was just wondering which one is better/higher quality. and more reliable?
thank all you guys.

Of whose?

I've been out of the scene for a little bit, but I recall some Atkins rebuilds being questionable, but Pineapple being extremely high quality.

GoodfellaFD3S 09-23-08 11:01 PM

^^^Garret is talking about Tiger Auto Parts.

jlc 09-25-08 12:04 PM

yeah it really sucks, i should have done alot more research before "sealing the deal" i wasn't a member of this forum when i bought it though.

I too got a bad motor from the same place, shipped to the uk,i paid with my credit card, the rear rotor n housing was shot,But i got a full refund from my credit card company as tiger were messing with me,now i have a good engine,n i have a spare engine n tranny free of charge, gonna rebuild the bad one from tiger,Its a shame as it had not long had a atk rebuild.

KKMpunkrock2011 09-25-08 04:54 PM

yeah, tiger fucking blows, a buddy of mine got a motor from a tII for his swap and there was so much shit wrong with it that it wasn't even usable after a rebuild. he called them and asked for his money back and they pretty much refused to do it, so like RIX-7, he called his credit card company and got his money back. same thing happened to another friend of mine cept with him it was a b18 with fucked heads

jlc 09-25-08 07:25 PM

yeah i am gonna have to try that. since day one my engine needed something changed on it. the check engine light was always on, then as soon as the CEL went off after alot more money. my coolant problem started.
i will try to call tiger first and talk to them about it. then i will call the credit card co. if they dont.
-but how does that work with the credit card company? do they contact tiger and get the money for you?

Zhé 09-26-08 09:21 AM

shouldnt even bother callin tiger auto, all that will do is frustrate you, just go straight to cred card company

RIX-7 09-26-08 02:34 PM

refund

Phone your credit card company, they will tell you what to do,you have to email tiger n save your replys if you get any, they will prob get you to fill in there online claim form if you email them as i did, there are comments boxes, dont loose your temper,be polite at all times, tell them that your item is faulty and you have there item waiting collection at a time that is suitable for them and yourself, give them a couple of days, print off your claim form as well, you need a mechanic or garage to confirm its no good,n basically you get a refund from your credit card company as there bank has to refund the credit card company,Call your creditcard company and they will tell you what to do, Best thing on my claim form was, they said give us good feed back on ebay n we will refund you,I did not even buy it on ebay,so they sort of fooked themselves there.Good luck.Rix:wallbash:
