MAP sensor functions??
O.K. guys, I have read on another thread (still on the board) that on of the symptoms of a bad MAP sensor is popping from the engine in second gear higher rpm range.
Well, I am having this exact problem, but it is somewhat random. when I am accelerating to get onto the highway, I usally do not have the popping noise. It is mostly street driving where it starts. Is this popping noise detonation? (I have a Pettite ECU and a new Bosch O2 sensor and my A/F gauge is in the middle of the rich marks) If it is just the MAP sensor, could someone please enlighten me on the functionality of this doohickey. I have searched around (like RR's site and others and did not find any write ups about it, other than what M.A.P stands for). Thanks alot. :) |
MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor ... it basically tells your computer how much air is flowing through the manifold so that it can send the proper amount of fuel to meet the air. Obviously, that's one of the problems with a rotary, as the MAP reading is always just a hair too late and forces the computer to guess.
There's another type that's a bit smarter, and is found on most Nissans and Toyotas, the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. It's found usuaully in the airbox or right behind it in the airflow line. This type of sensor is better because it senses the amount of air entering the motor much earlier than a MAP sensor, and can be met with the proper amount of fuel without the computer guessing. I'm not sure of the symptoms specifically, but your car would definitely run funny and you could lean out and go boom and need a new motor very fast with a bad MAP sensor! |
Thanks for the reply DK. I am going to replace it just to see if the symptoms go away.

Holy $h!t, I just looked up the price for the MAP sensor and it's over 370 dollars. Is this a joke?? I have a Porsche and similar parts are notas expensive! I need to :ar: somebody from Mazda now.
|
No, that price is no joke! Maybe you should just pick up a working used one, try posting an ad in the Parts Wanted section.

I got my 3 bar map sensor from msd for like $100. Might not be a bad idea to go with a 3 bar map sensor now while you are at it.

Where exactly is the MAP sensor on an FD? I thought the boost sensor was the equivalent to the MAP sensor. What makes them go bad, maybe the car setting up for a long period of time.
Can I get more info on where to get the $100 3 bar sensor. Thanks, |
Damn, thread brought back from the dead!
