I have just bought an 93 FD, and its missing the hole airbox... :rolleyes:

what is the best air box?

M2 Carbon Fiber Cold Air Box or the OEM airbox?

Any other solutions?

IIRC, M2 performance went out of business, so there really is no way to get the air box anymore, unless you buy it used. I do know that RX7store did sell a copy of them, but they dont that anymore either. If someone does know a place to buy them, i'm sure they'll chime in.

So at the moment, the cheap bastard airbox mod is the way to go. But if you're looking at getting rid of the OEM airbox and want a cold air intake, i'm sure you could fab up an intake divider and just get some filters, or just go for the pettit intake, which is basically the same thing.

An open intake, like the Pettit, Apexi, Blitz, etc., is NOT a cold-air intake or the "same thing". Not even close, even if you used a ceramic heat shield. Temp measurements were done years ago and found that the Pettit intake had much higher temps in idle, low speed, and even on the highway vs the stock and M2 style boxes.

The FACTS are, that the stock and PFS intakes have the coldest intake air temps. This is PROVEN FACT. The next best thing would be the M2/RX7fashion intakes.

joastarlet: Do the Adamc airbox mod. If you want to run a bigger intercooler and can't run the stock air box anymore, then get an rx7fashion intake box. These can be purchased at www.rx7fashion.com

You could also run the PFS airbox/SMIC setup, which works very well but makes working on the car a bit of a chore.

I like to know the parameters of the tests, and especially heat soak of the box style intakes versus the vented circulated intakes.

And that's with the Pettit, which at least attempts to heat shield, the other open intakes don't even have that.

As far as proof goes, even without the numbers above, it's pretty much common sense as to which style of intake is going to be cooler....

Thanks, I remember now. Well, according to Pettit(I know), he placed probes to measure temperature at idle and highway speeds. He found that the shield helped keep hot engine air away from the filters, and at moving speeds, hot air ventilated freely away from the filters(as opposed to trapped heat soaked air from a sealed hot box), thereby drawing fresh air from the frame rails at lower temperatures.

Pettit said that - I think he's a little biased :wink: - and you can only do so much. Can't beat Adams mod for the price.

i have the pettit. it sucks. it just sucks.

i placed my own dang probes and if you stop for 30sec you get a 10-15C increase in temp around the filters. while moving it did not cool down quickly either. get an m2 style or nuthin.

Tyler, what about the design of the PFS airbox makes it colder than the M2? Because it's ducted to share air from the front airdam w/ the IC? I haven't ever held a PFS intake to see the shielding, but the M2's I've come across have pretty nice shielding.

Oh and thanks for proving my point well over. An enclosed cold air box is much better (due to shielding and air source) than an open air intake pulling from a hot engine bay. In fact, my M2's shielding goes all the way down, pulling air from the nose...

On that note, I have a CF M2 intake for sale if anyone's interested. PERFECT condition. But yea...it ain't goin for cheap ;)

The M2/RX7fashion boxes pull air from underneath the car next to the radiator. The PFS only pulls air straight from the nose of the car, just like the stock setup. It won't run quite as cool as the stock box, because the PFS backplate is metal rather than plastic and heatsoaks more.

I just bought my FD from tri-point engineering, and Mark said that they are currently in development of a m2 style carbon fiber airbox. According to him, they came up with the original design then M2 copied it with carbon fiber and made it fit with the intercoolers they use. He said it should be too long till its ready, but that CF people are somewhat flakes, so it is taking a while. Im prolly gonna buy it when they get it finished :-P.
