Lumpy idle, it ain't the Map Sensor.

Just happened last night. A friend is interested in buying an FD, so I brought mine over, etc... I was boostin' alot. The car is bone stock, w/ drop in, and dp. I wasn't paying attention but I think I was boostin' normally.

I get off the freeway, and the car is idling terribly. It's almost about to stall but never does. I checked the map sensor, but its still on.

We let the car idle in a parking lot. The idle was still bad, and my vac. normally sits at 18, but it was lumpy around 14.

Also, white smoke started coming underneath my car, around the passenger wheel section.

I just rechecked the map sensor hoping it was the problem, but that things connected. I'm affraid to turn on the car.

Can anyone help me, please??

Ya, check all fo your vacuum lines. If they are all connected properly and none of them have come off start saving some money for a rebuild. It kind of sound like a blown engine but double check the lines. Good luck.

Find where the smoke is coming from... doesnt sound good though. If it was just a vac line I dont know why you would be smoking.

I have had a oil leak for awhile, just tiny drops. Last time it was checked they said it was a dirty oil sender/sensor.

I've checked all the vac lines, at least the ones I can see. They seem connected.

But I dunno, I really hope the motors not blown.

Btw, somebody fill me in on more syptoms of a blown motor. Idles only bad when I'm at a full stop, when I'm driving, like freeway driving, its smooth. I'm hearing a lot of popping sounds from my exhaust (stock). Like back firing. But theres not white or fuel rich smoke.

Get a compression check if you think its your motor... and then you will at least know... and be able to sleep at night.. or not;)

SoCalLove 05-11-03 06:25 PM

Yeah, I'm definitly going to get a comp. check. It's weird, its like everyone worries about their motor going and when that time comes, its like you can give a sigh of relief and just start over again.

mine did the same thing almost exactly. Take off the radiator cap and turn over the car. if it bubbles constantly you probably blew your o-rings. if the car will start let it idle as best as possible and watch the water level. not good if it keeps going up. (make sure you have water in it first) unfortunatly it doesn't sound good. but that's why we love these things rite!! Try Atkins rotary or pineapple racing for rebuilds.Atkins is around 3500 depending on the build you get and shipping.I live in Hawaii and got one for my wife's 90 and shipping was only 300 and was here in 2days. They also come with a 2year 24k mile warranty. good people! Aloha Bra hope i could help!

SoCalLove 05-11-03 11:37 PM

Thanks for the advice BigIslandSevens. If it turns out that if my motor is blown, I'd like to go w/ pineapple. I hear good things about them as well. I started the car this afternoon, and surprisingly it turned on normally and idle was fine, but after a minute the engine was visibley shaking, not a violent shake though.

There weres no black/white smoke or any kind of condensation coming from the exhaust. My oil level was just below full too. My idle wasn't lumpy, it stayed up around 1k rpm, but my vac. reading was some what hesistant around 18 vac. I only let the car idle for 5 mins before I shut it off.

I'm keeping an optimistic view and still hoping for the best. Tuesday is the closets time for me to bring it to the shop. But I'll try your recommended test on Monday, and see if there are any bubbles. Let the motor run while I do that, right?

And its still possible to drive on a blown motor, right? Well, wish me luck guys. I'll let you know my prognosis, asap. Thanks.

Lumpy idle is a sign of a Busted Apex or Corner seal - Mine is doing the lumpy idle low vaccum thing, and a compression check showed a bad apex or corner seal on the rear rotor - a rebuild is in my near future. :-(

BLOWN!!!!

LOL!

My baby needs a heart transplant. I'll most likely go w/ a reman. And I'm keeping it stock!

Rear rotor 3.2 / 7.1 / 4.3 @ 251 rpm

Front rotor 7.1 / 7.2 / 7.3 @ 225 rpm

 :crzyeye:

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get drunk now

aw thats to bad man... good luck with a new engine!

Hey Socal,

FYI, Do a search on Mazda Reman motors. Lots of horror stories on the quality of those remans. I talked to 3 shops in my area that will no longer order Mazda Remans to install into customer's cars...

Hey jpandes, yeah I've read plenty of stories on the remans. But I'm on a very tight budget as it is. I'm might be driving on a blown motor for awhile. I trust my mech and he says that Mazda's cleaned up there act, so the remans aren't all as bad. But we'll see.

More than likely I'll get a reman, I can't afford a rebuild. But I'm still looking. I got a friend, who got rid of his FD, he just had a new motor installed in it. I'm guuna see if he might sell me that motor.

Thanks.
