Lucas gear oil? Anyone use this on their trannys?
 

Anyone have experience using this gear oil 80w90 (is this right?) in their FD transmissions and rear ends? The bottle says its safe for trannys and limited slip differentials. I've heard good stuff about Lucas from non-RX-7 people and was thinking about using this stuff in my FD.

i've used lucas in my transmission before, in your avatar its says you are from P-town. Are you refering to Pomona? if you are thats why you know about lucas probably, at first they didn't sell this stuff in all the stores but now you can get it at Autozone, and Kragen so I'm think Lucas products are still mostly in SoCal. I trustr there products, I don't know how many trannies we have made stop slipping using there Transmission slip oil.
Maybe you should try it and tells us, is it more expensive then RedLine.

I used lucas in my tranny when my 5th gear started grinding...we have it here in NY too. It absolutely did not stop the grind but it did however help a whole bunch with my notchy 1st to 2nd shift. One thing to keep in mind, lucas is so, so thick and I went through 3 different pumps trying to pump it up into my tranny...that did not work. I broke every pump. What I had to do was run the tube into the tranny and up and out from under the hood, then just dump the lucas down into the tube. It actually took multiple hours for the entire lucas bottle to drain, and that was after I heated it up. It also stinks like nothing else on earth so try not to get it on anything. I found that out when the pumps kept braking and I was dumping lucas all over everything, including myself.

Lucas is easier to get than Redline or Royal Purple. I used Redline in my N/A FC's manual tranny and it was great for a while. After a while it seemed like its magical powers ran out and my tranny didnt feel as smooth as it did when I first used Redline. One of my friends said the same thing about Redline. I was thinking about going w/Royal Purple but the price tag and having to special order it kinda scared me away.

I'll probably try the Lucas unless I find a place that carries Royal Purple locally and has it in stock.

Here is my experience with Redline MT-90 or 75/90 for tranny on both FC and FD:

In both cars, I changed the fluids 3 times each.

Each time I changed it, the shift got progressively better.

By the 3rd time it was hot knife on butter. Finger tip shifting for the FC. Much less notchy shifting for the FD.

My guess is that each time u change it, u flush out the old residual stuff that was in there before.

Yeah Im with Batman in the fact that I believe that you have to change your fluid a couple of times before you get the full effect of the product. I've been too lazy to do it on mine but it's not like I have time.

I've bought the RP motor oil from this guy several times.

No experience with Lucas. Just with whatever Mazda uses and Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. Mobil 1 is a little better but still hard to shift when very cold outside.

Next trans change will be to RP...

Royal Purple has my vote. Used it for 2 years and my tranny is smooth as silk

Same guy I bought it from. I bought everything Royal Purple (transmission, differential & engine). good people, though.

In my case, I tried to change the gear oil to see if it'll get rid of hard shifting in 2nd and 5th gear. So far, it only does it when the transmission is cold, specially 5th gear.

i just changed my tranny oil yesterday, replaced it with Amsoil...my question is, the oil that came out was blue. Who makes blue gear lube?

It's a synthetic formula.

I used Amsoil and the results weren't ass good as Redline.

However, u can use it as ur first flush along with every oil change.

I use have used RED LINE for over 15 years - Great stuff -. Red Line has made many engines, trans and diffs, I have been involved with, survive to finish a race. Almost all racers I know have switched to Royal Purple for engine use. I currently use #41 in my 13b and am very happy with it other than price. ( No metering pump)I currently use Red Line in the trans and diff of my FD3 because I had a few quarts left lying around. Works great, smoother shifting on my rebuilt trans. ( New syncs and bearings ) I have no hard facts on Royal Purple's trans or diff fluids yet. I will switch to Royal Purple in another 4000 miles and try some out. I hope it turns out as well as there engine oil did for my applications.

Well, the only problem you may experience is more difficult gear engagement when cold. Lucas makes very good products as do all the other manufacturers listed, however, using a gear oil in the tranny(manual) isn't the best solution. Using a fluid that is designed for a Manual tranny is adviseable since they contain special abrasive modifier additives to help engage the synchro's properly. A very "slick" gear oil doesn't have these modifiers and can prevent the synchro's from engaging properly and thus cause difficult shifts. Gear oil will work, but not ideal, especially in a car that quick shifting or "crashing" gears is regularly employed.
As for diff oil, any will work just fine, if you have a KAAZ diff it's recommended to use their lube, however, I've used amsoil for 3 years now and no problems with the diff, it is a little noisier than with KAAZ' oil but I just add 2 bottles of GM hypoid diff additive and it quiets it a lot.

The gear oil you linked me to is safe for LSD rear ends and manual trannys right?

i use lucas on everything that has to do with oil on my car. . . except for the 2cycle injection setup that i have. that stuff works. it made a lot of the "noise" go away. i use lucas full synthetic gear oil along with oil stabilizer. its good stuff. i recommend it to everyone.

Actually I liked the Z-max I used a few years ago even better than the lucas...only problem is its 35 bucks to get the stuff.
