LSD gone bad????

Hi gang,

Was at the track on Friday and think I killed my limited slip diff. Does anybody have experience diagnosing this problem?

When I pulled off the track at the end of the session, the rear was making noise. Car drove fine and gears worked fine. I jacked the car up and turned the rear wheels by hand and the opposite wheel did not turn, and there seem to be a lot of play in the diff when changing direction.

What do you guys think?

Thanks
Bake

our stock diffs are torsen diffs which means they are TORQUE SENSING LIMITED SLIP ("TORSEN LSD").
Im about 80% sure that when you jack it up, it will not turn one wheel when you turn the other, to test the LSD, do one of the following...

1: when raining, warm up your car and then have some one stand on either side of your car and do a burnout, if both wheels spin, its should be ok

2: put one wheel on the sidewalk and one in the grass/mud, again warm up your car and do a burn out, if you can leave a black mark on the sidewalk, your lsd should be fine

3: wait till dry and do a burn out after warming up your car, then burn out and if you can leave 2 black streaks, your lsd should be fine.

try changing out your diff fluid and when you drain it, look for metal stuff that falls out, if there is stuff that falls out, your screwed (sorry)

check this out for further help, http://www.mazdatrix.com/g2.htm

I'll try to look for more stuff for you later. Good luck :)

P.S. what do you mean by "there seem to be a lot of play in the diff when changing direction. "

Skunks,

Thanks, good info. Good links. May be just fluid went bad. It was a really hot day. As for lots of play, I meant when I would change rotation of the wheel when working it by hand. Seemed to be a lot of "slop"
between forward and reverse in the diff.

What do you think?

Thanks

Sounds like either you broke a tooth or the the LSD clutches are going out or are out.
if you dare do a 5k rev and pop the clutch see if you still get the dual skids. ________ __ __ _ _

UPDATE!

Drained fluid. VERY black, dirty. No significant bits of metal on magnetic drain plug. silvery film on fingers when wiped across drain plug. I would assume that would be "normal"??

I will be using redline gear oil for LSD and road testing today. Wish me luck.
