Low Oil Light --HEELP !!
 

Well, I finally got the UIM back on and fired her up after changing out the FPR and 2 primary injectors. (I did go back and put that balck plastic spacer in)

I checked the oil before starting. It was to F.
Refilled coolant and it is full now.

Started her up. She runs great ! Sounds good and drives good. I let it idle for maybe 5 min or so and all was well. I got in her to drive and noticed that the low oil light was on.

Once the rpms got up it went off .. for a second. The pressure is just above 0.... maybe at like 10-20 when it is idling. The highest it got to in my short drive was 60. At a higher RPM (maybe 4k). For the most of the drive it was at 20-30 range. I was around 2-3k (I have an auto). The red light never really went out for long. I drove maybe 1/8 mi. and then did a U-turn and turned around. When I did that U-turn it went out again, then came back on.

It seemed at my next turn it also went out and then came back on in the stright areas.

The car has been sitting for 2-3wks until tonight. (With oil in it, (full))

I checked the oil level when I got back, it was the same as before, full.

Is my pressure oddly low? It seems with this red light on and the pressure never really getting above 30-40 much that it is not safe to drive///

What could be my problem?

it was a left handed u turn. ..

I think you have 2 separate problems:

1) bad wiring (fatigued at the sensor?) to the oil-level sensor, and
2) poor connection to or faulty/dirty oil pressure sensor.

IIRC, both of these are common problems.

Hmm. I am not sure where these wires/sensors are located.

Where do I start ?

The oil level sensor is on the left side of the oil pan and has a wire leading to it.

The oil pressure sensor is the ~1.5-in diameter sensor (should have a grey or black rubber cover over it) sticking out of the left side of the engine just below the oil-filter. It also has a wire leading to it.

If you do a search for oil pressure sensor and oil level sensor, you should see plenty of threads on what you asked.

Which is why I asked for DIY or pictures. I really appreciate the link. That will help me alot. I know why I didn't find that one, I searched for sensor and not sender. Grr.

Ok, so I think my pressure sensor is bad and that the level senser has had its 1 wire ripped out.

Will I have to replace the senser or can the wire be put back in?

Where do you suggest I buy these items?

So how hard are these to replace? I'm pretty big into DIY, but for really hard items I just let the pros get my $$ and they can deal with the headaches (like the fuel filter..lol)

Sorry if I ticked you off, but if you don't want snarky comments saying to search, at least say up front that you tried searching but had no luck. The reason we recommend searching is that many posters don't even try, they just want an instant, easy, answer.

The oil pressure sensor is easy. I haven't done the level sensor (sender), but I have seen threads that, IIRC, say it's not too hard. I think it bolts to the pan with a couple of small bolts, but the oil should be drained first, because it's obviously below the normal oil level. You may be able to repair the wire if it's broken or whatever w/o removing it, but I've not personally had to do that.

Well, this picture is taken from below, the white clip in the middle of the picture near the starter looks like it is the one for the level sensor. This wire was ripped out of something. I am assuming it was ripped out of this next picture:

This is the pressure sensor right? It doesnt really look like the pic you linked to me although it is in the right area... below the oil filer pedestal. I think this is it.

There is a black clip coming from the wire harness very near the starter. It is not hooked up/ What does this go to, it seems very short. I can not find its home....

There is another black clip in this picture as well. It is higher up. This went to what I believe was the pressure sensor. I disconnected it for the previous picture.

I totally know where you were coming from man. I have been on your end before. I am usually one of the ones helping, instead of being helped over at the bimmerforums. (I also own an M3) The RX is newer to me. I have had the M3 for 6 years and it always amazes me when newbs post obvious questions that basically show that they have done absolutely no research. I totally feel you.

I should have been more open. Hopefully my pictures will one day help another. Perhaps this thread will be searched in the future :)

I am thinking about it and I check my oil so often that I think I may just want to ground out that level senser wire, would that leave it always on or always off...

As the light is on now and it is unhooked now it seems that if I do ground it the light will go off. Hmm.

Oh the mystery black clip only has 1 wire. It is red and black and of a heafty guage!

You are correct in your comments on pics 1 and 2.

Pic 3, that is your oil pressure sending unit.

Re: your mystery clip, are you sure it doesn't go to the starter?

I am not sure. However, the car does start fine. It is just that the brake has to be pressed in the correct order for it to start. (I have an auto)/

Perhaps it has something to do with starting when the brake is not depressed or is depressed at the wrong time?

Otherwise it starts fine. I didn't see a place for it on the starter, however it is quite dirty...
