Low Gas = Hard Bog / Bucking
 

I just got a 93 FD and when I have low gas or push it hard out of 1st I get this super hard bogg or fuel cut feeling like the car is turning off. I recently had the battery out and replaced the elbow with a greddy elbow but other then that it's pretty basic set up with a Pettit Racing piggy back ECU. I am not sure at all whats causing this but if I ill up the tank more then half way it seems as if it is much better. Also if I can turning a corner and opening it up hard in second it seems to do it then also.

Change your fuel filter.

OK. Sorry to ask this but do any of you guys recommend a certain brand or place to buy them? I would just go to auto zone or something like this if I didn't know any better.

With low fuel, gas can slosh to one side of the tank, and starve the "pickup" line. This happened to me the first time I autocrossed the car. Now I always race with a full tank ......... even though I don't like the extra weight ;).

Perhaps the baffle in your gas tank collapsed or deteriorated. What boost levels are you hitting on that setup?

I am running stock boost right now because the car needs tuned. It happens a lot when I am low on gas and rarely when I gun it out of second. It doesn't happen once I am in 3rd and 4th and 5th gears though.

Fuel starvation is the other major issue I can think of, and the others already mentioned it.

But if your fuel filter hasn't been changed in a while (20k or more) I'd change it right away.

Probably a good idea to change the fuel filter. However, a clogged filter would effect the car in a similar manner whether the tank was full or low on fuel.

My FD has always done this. And when it's really low (last 1 or 2 gallons) it will start bucking and cutting out just driving around town. It's the final warning before you run out of gas. Don't attempt to run the car hard with low gas or when it starts doing this.

No I mean I have a quarter tank when it starts happening.

my car had the exact same problem. cutting out in 1st or 2nd gear. the lower the gas level, the more it would cut. full tank = no problem. 3rd 4th gear = no problem. I changed my fuel filter . . . same problem. changed my fuel pump . . . BINGO! no more cutting out.
I think the old pump could not produce enough presure for quickly rising RPMs.

The same thing happened to me. Change fuel filter, it was still bogging . But the problem was the fuel pump strainer. It was clogged and filled with so much powder. Went to AutoZone got the replacement fuel pump strainer put the fuel pump back in and it felt like a brand new car! No more fuel cut. No more bogging. I don't know if this will work for you, but I had the same excat problems you have. Hope this hrelps.

FD369 where is this strainer?

Go in the back, open the the rear hatch. Where the spare tire is, there is a metal lid next to the spare tire on the left side. That is the fuel pump. Make sure you're low on gas before you pull it out. Pull out the fuel pump and the strainer is connected to the bottom. Good luck!

Since you'll be working around the same area...I would go ahead and change out the fuel filter anways too if you haven't performed it since you got the car or don't know if the previous owner did it yet. it's one of first things I did when i got my FD.

That's half the reason I mentioned it - it's too often overlooked.

But on second thought I don't think it would cause bogging under load. Bogging at idle, yes, but not under load.

The 'strainer' on the fuel pump is like a nylon sock. That's what you're looking for.
