1st is not bad. 2nd its noticeble. 3rd gets pretty loud. Then 4th and 5th are insane. Any ideas on what this noose coukd be? When i hit the gas the noise gets loud, but when im off the gas or braking its fine.

Any help would be appreciated

Bearings.

oyvindjs 07-29-11 06:13 AM

as banzai says. + check for oil-lvl(should be about up to the bolt you undo to fill oil).
also check your PPF for cracks. If its cracked and bends on load, the bearing towards the main shaft will wear faster.

mr2dude9161 07-29-11 08:42 AM

How much am i looking at for the price of bearings? Also i think it may be a crack cause all of the bolts are tight and I had a leak. The oil lever was not too low though.

Is this a hard job to do?

mr2dude9161 07-29-11 11:01 AM

Can someone tell me what bearings i need or at least a guide on to what kind of a job i am looking at.

Thanks in advance,

I'd just get another diff, you can easily un-bolt yours and replace the whole pumpkin yourself. This will likely be the cheapest option due to diff rebuilds costing a pretty penny and also not being something the average person can do successfully the first time.

Where do you live? There may be someone nearby that might have one for sale.

This too, even if you get a new diff it won't last long if you have a cracked PPF.

Oh na bro I def dont have a cracked PPF. I inspected it very well last time I had it off like 2 months ago.

How much should a used one run? Is it worth spending the money on a used one or just buying a diff from banzai?

I am in Tampa FL

My diff has a constant loud noise that does not change with load, only speed. I've had different gears and a different torsen in it and replaced the bearings and its still there, I don't know why. It was never there with the stock diff until I had a shop put in different gears and bearing kit a few years ago.

mr2dude9161 07-29-11 12:26 PM

Weird. Mine has 4.30 gears in, but was working fine until last night when the noise started. Mine def has to do with speed, but load also affects the sound.

Check the diff bushings, bolts and ppf. . .

Banzai-Racing 07-29-11 12:29 PM

You do not need to replace your LSD unit to replace the carrier and pinion bearings. The bearing & seal kit with from Mazda is a couple hundred dollars. However you need to know how to set the preload and backlash, this requires a few special tools.

Thanks Banzai does anyone have a guide on how to get this done. I am trying to pick up a used one locally but they want 500. I offered 300 and see if they bite.

Banzai-Racing 07-29-11 12:35 PM

FSM covers it.

He's On Toroids 07-29-11 12:36 PM

500 isn't too bad of a price for 4.3 actually (IMO)

If they want 500 for a 4.1 They must be smoking something unless it is brand new.

This is the best Differential thread I've seen https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/fd-differential-remove-replace-writeup-897359/

Thanks, I was going to mention that.

If I can do this, anyone can. And, you can never have too many tools. :)

Ive got a diff from a 93 with 85k miles on it. $400 picked up in Gainesville, FL and it is yours!

mr2dude9161 07-29-11 09:08 PM

I actually spoke to the guy that has the diff for 500 and talked to him about me being local and paying cash and he came down to 415 and he is 5 min from me.

I think I am going to pick this up on Monday. I replaced the fluid in mine and it is still making noise. How much can u sell a rear diff with my issues for with the 4.30 gears in it?

Also people asked about metal shavings. There were none on the magetic drain plug when i drained the fluid. :-)

He's On Toroids 08-01-11 08:21 AM

People will care more about the gears themselves then the rest of the diff. I'd pop off the back of the diff and make sure the gears are still sharply cut. If they are, you may be able to get some decent money out of them. Due to the issues, the diff is going to be worth different things to different people. But I'd post it for $500 or so noting the troubles. I think I've seen Fritz list 4.3 full pumpkins at $600 pretty regularly. It really just depends on how long you want to wait for a sale.
