lost 5th gear

Ok ever scince i had 93fd (no mods) she has made a little grinding sound when I shift into 5th gear. Now I can not shift into 5th at all. I'ts like the gear isnt even there. I still have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and reverse. It doesn't make the grinding sound anymore when i try either. Has anyone else had this problem?

That broken 5th synchro is now out of position and blocking the clutch sleeve from engaging the gear. Make sure to have a new 5/R clutch sleeve on hand as well as 5 synchro when you have it fixed.

^damn I love reading your posts about tranny's...I learn so much. I guess until I tear one down, they will flabbergast me, haha.

Hey Dave,.. Can you replace the parts you listed without having to tear the tranny completly apart? Do you just remove the rear housing? Or complete tear down. Thanks. I would like to take care of this over the winter.

Any odd speacial tools needed? That only Mazda makes;)

Damn! Got a link to his write up?

well I've read your write up...and you've offer to rent the tools, etc...

For 5th clutch sleeve and synchro, you only need a big socket (1-1/4"?) to remove the countershaft nut, and a set of extensions to make an extra-long 2-jaw puller. I also had to grind the ends of the puller a bit since they didn't quite fit under the edges of one of the bearings. For a complete rebuild you'll need some more bearing pullers, a press, and a super-deep socket or some other socket for the mainshaft locknut.

5th synchro is not a complete teardown - just need to remove the extension housing, rear bearing plate, and 5/r housing. I've heard it can be done on the car, but I've never tried it. I just stand the tranny clutch side down and work down.

My writeup is at www.davidgeesaman.com - but there are some other writeups linked in the FAQ that cover just 5th synchro more concisely.

So how much would a shop charge me? aprox. I dont have tools otherwise id do it myself.

dgeesaman 11-27-05 07:26 PM

I dunno - $500? Call a rotary shop and tell them you need a 5th synchro job.
