Looking for an old Grassroots Article on a FD
 

It was maybe a 2 or 3 page article. I would appreciate if you could tell me the issue number/year. Scanning in the pictures of the car would be even more helpful.

It was about a car in the Asheville, NC area. I believe the owner is Steve Eckerich/Eckrich. The finished car was spliced together from two halves and was prepared as a hillclimb car. I believe it was painted a custom color - maybe gunmetal/silver?

I looked in my pile of GRM's with no luck. It must have been one that someone loaned me (I think the issue had some info on BMW's in it if that helps you locate it).

Some of you know that I'm a little off-keel in the head. Rest easy, I'm not planning on grafting two cars together!

It wasn't that great of article. The owner had claimed some outrageous HP with the stock IC and intake...

Yeah, Jeff, we've heard that before, right?

Perfect "round number" horsepower figures without dyno sheet making some synapses fire, eh...

I still need those pictures, though! ;)

seen the car at an autocross, got a friend who collects grassroots, maybe if he has it i scan the article as a picture for ya? what ya think?

March 2003, pg. 67-70 , cover feature is "Porsche vs. Minivan"

Paint color is "Silver Stone Metallic." Owner is Steve Eckerich. Car is set up for ASP autox, and he claims 310HP, 270lb-ft to the rear wheels, this might be from the clutch, race-prepped transmission, and flywheel. Also Peter Farrell muffler, high-flow oil cooler, Magnecor ignition wires. Stock intake.

The interesting part about that car is the rollcage described in the article. Unfortunately, neither the photos nor the descriptive text are very useful.

Hmmm, well reading it again, I suppose if you know what you're doing with fabricating, welding, and rollcages, it could be helpful. No clear how-to for dummies, however, which is what I wanted to see.

What precisely were you looking for?

Building a rollbar without cutting the chassis at all would be kinda nice, I don't know how much I would trust the threaded bits though.

Most people building cages for rallycars cut the floor and drop the bottom of the cage down so they could weld the top of the cage nicely.

That's some great info Jim. It will be some time before I would get around to putting in a rollbar or cage. However, it's always good to have reference material to show the builder. I like how yours is set up, and the M2 kits also look good.

Ashraf, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I notice, however, that you and the GRM car in NC, so perhaps you can arrange to see the car in person.

It may be possible, but they are on the other end of NC and it's not a quick hour drive over there. I'm not the one that needs to see it in details, too.

The guy building my new setup saw that car a while ago and wants some reference materials for my build up.
Yup, I'm paying someone to do work on my car. That's rare for me, but I know better than to stake my life on my sub-amateur welding ability.

I still want to get a good welder so I can build a cage (and pay someone to do final inspection) for my other project once the FD is out of the operating room. :)

Jim -- Thanks for the link to thread detailing your setup. I skimmed it just now (past bedtime) and will look it over tomorrow. I think that between the two and my builder's ingenuity, we should be able to come up with specs for something that will fit all my needs.

I'm willing to spend money for quality safety items and scrimp on my car's performance.
