Looking to buy a used auto FD

Have a few questions, looking to pick up a 93 FD, the main problem with it is that there is oil leaking into the radiator fluid. The owner says that this can be replaced by a new head gasket that requires dropping the engine. Any estimate on how expensive of a job this would be? Also can a auto FD twin turbo be fast, I know it will be a second or two slower than a 5spd, but can the auto handle the power?
THanks

head gasket?

There is no head gasket on a rotary engine. One of the coolant seals is leaking on it which will require a rebuild / new engine. And yes, the engine will have to come out of the car to do this. The cost is likely to run you in the $5,000 range. (Although there may be some place that can do it cheaper.) There are shops in Orlando and Tampa that can do the job for you.
Stock, the automatics were about half a second slower. The only magazine test I ever saw of an automatic 3rd Gen RX-7 had a 0-60 time of 6 seconds flat and 14.5 in the 1/4 mile.
Obviously, a few relatively easy mods could lower those times.

yeah, don't believe the specifications that they give on auto FDs, it said 13.9second on one site and mine sure as hell does'nt do that. but to set things straight, if you want power and torque, which the auto FD feels like it's lacking in, just go with a stick and don't even bother getting a car that's already a headache in the firstplace. when i got my auto FD the radiator end tank cracked the first day. and i was without it for 2 weeks because i had to figure out where it was coming from

The fact that the owner is trying to blow smoke up your ass and just flat LIE to you means you need to walk away and look for another car, in my opinion.

Head gasket...sheesh!

Well he didn't say Headgasket, he just said a gasket is bad. So a rebuild just to get this motor running would cost me around 5grand? THe engine itself has 43k on it, I was hoping to just get it taken out and have the apex seals replaced and maybe that's it. THe only smoke he did blow was that it ran a 12.8 last time he was at the track. I don't think its heavily modded.

The engine needs to rebuilt, plain and simple!! If you want to deal with this, and the price is right, get the car. If not, walk away. Bottom line is you need a new engine.

You will probably need new piston rings :rlaugh:

How do you know that oil is leaking into the rad fluid? Did you check? The owner seems to be b/s ing you or doesn't know what he's talking about. If hes bsing you, he probably wouldn't tell you about the leak. If he doesn't know what he's talking about, there may not be anything wrong with the car.
