I just got home. I just walked 4 miles to get here. I think my engine died. Was driving conservatively to work and make a turn into a sidestreet...im going 25 in second gear, low RPM and i here POP almost like an intercooler hose popping off. The car surges and dogs down and starts idling really rough, i immediately turn off the car. Fluids look ok, spark plug wires firmly in place. Damn. Tried starting the car again, but it was idling at 300 up and down and extremely rough with the vacuum fluctuating at 0 to -5 hg. I think one of my seals finally went. :sad:

I still gotta get my car towed to my house so I can return it to stock before I call the warranty company. Anyone have any ideas just in case I didnt blow the engine? All the hoses and sensors looked to be in the apropriate place. :(

That sucks man. Check out the obvious things first...nobody *wants* to pay big bux for a new engine if they don't have to. Check with BATMAN, he's had plenty of engines, he might be able to help with the diagnosis :)

DON'T PANIC!!!!

Check your MAP Sensor, it is on the firewall on the drivers side. It is a little box with a nipple and vacuum hose leading to the bottom of the intake manifold. The vacuum hose probably came off.

If that popped off, you will experience exactly what you are talking about. It is a limp mode the car goes into. Actually it's more like your car thinks you are on full throtle because it is not getting the right signal from the MAP, boost sensor.

If it is off, reattach it.

Kinda sounds like the MAP hose came off, check that.

Surging idle, black smoke from tailpipe? It always scares owners the first time it pops off. Hope and pray it's the MAP sensor. Grab your keys and start walking back.

Mine did the samething but mine was idleling at 200-500 I was able to drive it still but it just Idle like it had big cams..sound cool.. got it compression tested and it failed. Is there any oil in the back bumper? Did u see black smoke puff out?

I had some vacuum hoses pop off under the manifold last week. My idle went up and down up and down up and down up and down up and down.

Almost thought damage was done. Check that and the Map sensor these guys are talking about.

I agree with everyone who is saying its the boost sensor hose. Driver's side firewall. The hose probably blew off the nipple that it goes into. Ur symptoms are exactly what will happen too. Try that:D

Yup...already checked the MAP...I was able to limp home (car sounded like one of jimlab's V8's) Im gonna pull off the intake manifold so i can get a better look at the hoses. There's no smoke coming out of the car, fluids look alright. Im praying its just a hose. I pulled out my plugs as well, any sound i should be looking for when I crank it?

I hope it is just a hose....seems like black R1s are cursed or something

MAP sensor hose is secure on both the intake manifold and on the sensor itself. *stretch* throttle body's off...now for the intake manifold.

I should have done this earlier, but anyone think theres a possibility that my PFC shorted out and malfunctioned? Im gonna put the stock ECU back in (ok to leave EGR wires cut?)

If I can't find the problem, it's time to start putting my car back to stock and send it to the warranty guys for inspection *knocks on wood*

hmm anyone nearby with a multimeter? Maybe the sensor itself has a bad connection. *in denial* I want to rule out every possibility

hmm interesting, underneath the pressure tank (removed the pressure tank), there is a group of hoses, but there is also two exposed metal nipples. where the hell did the hose go to connect the two? argh bastard! I hope that it's the culprit. If I can find a digital cameria, ill take a picture of the mofo.

Looks like this weekend will be silicone hose job weekend. Ive been lagging on it for long enough

if it's the same metal nipples (hmm.... metal nipples....) then those are not used and are only for automatics

There are a couple that are unconnected that are only used in the auto transmission version, I think. Check to see if the nipple is clean like there's been a vacuum tube on it in the past.

Damn I wish i saw this thread earlyer, I would have been down to come by with a meter for you. I can come by tommorrow if you still need some help.
As far as those lines under the pressure tank... you have a manual trans right? I think those lines are for when you have an auto. Try following the metal line, if i remember you should be able to see the begining and end. The one i'm talking about basically goes no where.

Yup those are the two... i figured they werent used since it looked dirty like there was never a hose there... Hmmm time to dive into the rats nest. I hope theres some popped hoses in there which i can fix.

When I crank the car without the plugs, it makes a whirring and zipping sound. Does that sound about right?

I'm still waiting to hear "compression test" from someone.

Test compression on the rear rotor first, do the front rotor only if the rear rotor passes. The rear rotor is the most commonly damaged rotor, and if you have low compression on one or more faces, you'll know immediately what your problem is without tearing off the intake manifold (too late, apparently), or digging through the rat's nest of vacuum hoses under it.

Once you've (hopefully) eliminated the possibility that the engine is blown, *then* you can start tracking down the possible causes of your low power and erratic idle.

im waiting to do the compression test last because i have a warranty, and im gonna have to put the car back to stock if a seal did indeed break. Kinda shiesty, but I modded safely.

Mod #1 = PFC
Mod #2 = Apex GT spec exhaust
Mod #3 = Apex Power Intake
Mod #4 = ACT Clutch

my AF gauge always said i was running a lil rich, and had stock boost levels with a good 10-8-9~10 pattern

I should just take everything out and put a V8 in there

hmm i found a check valve that had a snapped solenoid nipple inside the hose. Now I gotta find which solenoid it was attached to. Its looking hopeful

ok the snapped solenoid nipple is on the one closest to the alternator (from standing in front of the car) Anyone think that this solenoid would cause my car to run that poorly? Im not sure if the snapped solenoid nipple was pre-existing or if i just snapped it when i was going into the intake manifold Argh...removing the solenoid rack is gonna be a pain in the ass

The solenoid that is broken controls the double throttle...gonna do a search on the forum and see how it affects the car. Thanks for all the replies, i'll keep everyone posted on how it goes
