Lights motor - Mx5 fits FD?

Hallo guys,
one of my lights motor (the one that opens and closes the light) has started misworking . i checked everything and it was the motor it self. the internal gears are broken .

so time to change it. the thing is that one friend of mine gave me 2 motors from an mx 5 mk1 and he says it fits. I inserted the motor with no prob, and it fits perfectly the only issue i have is that the mx5 motor has one extra green cable. and so the clip is different. I can cut and connect the cables directly but will it work? whats this green extra cable?

has onyone tried this?

here are some pics of the original motor with the 4 cables (4 pins clip)
it has red - black - yellow and 2 white (one black&white and one red&white)
they go out to a 4 pin clip

the mx5 motor has the same cables BUT also a green one the uses an extra pin so its a 5 pin clip.

What year is your FD?

AlienHack 04-16-16 07:52 PM

1992 european one.

Well i sliced the cables and connected the 4 pin clip. So i pluged it in.
The motor works. It opens up the headlights when i use the light switch.

BUT the open close buton no longer does anything so i cant close my headlights.
If i manualy lower them then again they go up if i turn on the lights. But again i cant lower them. Neither by turning the lights off or using the raise lower switch..

I read mqny threads about this issue but didnt get a clear answer. Maybe i fried my retract relay.

Yeh that happened to mine also. The relay fried and would open the headlights but not close.

Unless the green wire is used to retract the motor?

I was able to swap the motor out of a 2nd gen into the 3rd gen assembly and it worked just fine. It was 2 years ago though and I'd have to do it again to explain how I did it. It would have probably worked with the Miata motor and you could have retained the connector and wiring. Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

For future reference, the retra-relay was fried. i changed it and everything works perfectly.

so the mx5 mk1 motor will fit and work perfectly in an fd. you just have to use your old 4 pin plug from your old/broken fd motor and splice cut the mx5 motor wires. they are all the same color as the fd motor so nothing difficult there BUT just cut the extra green wire and dont connect it anywhere.
