Light Weight Reduction Tricks? FD

Hey I'm sorry if somebody already posted a thread about this but I couldn't find any. Do you guys know of any tricks that'll reduce the weight of the RX7? I don't want to strip out my interior but I do want to get rid of some of the things I don't really need that are heavy. I thought you guys might know a few tricks. Thanks in advance. O and Merry Christmas! :D

straight through exhaust system, remove spare, recaro rz seats ;)

Sprockett 12-24-06 02:05 AM

To add to above:
Straight through exhaust IF you have the other stuff needed to run that. An ECU upgrade, and proper fuel supply. That'll take off a lot of weight because those cats are aweful heavy!

Is this for track purposes or an "all-the-time" sorta thing? You can always take out the passenger's seat at the track to lose a bit of weight...also the hatch cover (that piece of plastic and carpet) and the panel behind the seat. That's not going to get you down a whole lot, but without major work you're not going to lose a whole lot of weight. The FD is pretty light as it is. If you want to spend money, look for the lightest pair of wheels possible, a CF hood (painted if you want) and that CF hatch. That will save a lot of weight.

speaking of the hatch, that bitch is heavy, get a CF one with lexan window!

if your looking for some examples search under the name LUPE. he did a very good job of taking a lot of weight out of the car. it was on the scales at 2295lbs. too bad hes so big himeself :) jk lupe

Go n/a ;)

My turbo is too heavy :(

Lightweight battery I killed 30lbs... Also sound proofing but I won't imo.

go to the gym. Losing a few pounds yourself only helps yourself and the project out. Two birds with one stone, haha.

CF doors are on the yahoo auctions all the time in Japan. If you're serious, rip out all the carpeting and sound deadening stuff as well, all plastics that you dont need, etc.

Hm, I've been going to the gym a lot the last year, and I gained 20 pounds. What am I doing wrong :squint: :D?

JConn2299 12-24-06 09:12 AM

Here's one that won't cost you anything and will take a little weight off the nose of the car: make sure your windshield washer tank is empty.

R_PROWESS 12-24-06 09:46 AM

only fill your tank 3/4 or half.. every gallon of gas weighs ~8 lbs

get gauges that display more than 1 thing, so you can have less gauges taking up weight and space

Spare Tire an Jack !?? Hello ?

MisawaJason 12-24-06 11:42 AM

fill your tires with helium too

GUITARJUNKIE28 12-24-06 12:22 PM

you're not overweight, you're just under-powered ;)

You removed the steering wheel did you? How's that working out for you?

Doors are pricey, I've seen a carbon fiber set for $1900 from Seibon.

ultmtrx8 12-25-06 11:30 AM

forget trying to lose weight just get a bigger turbo to handle the weight :fawk:

if your gas weighs 8lbs its probably all water...lol.... gas weighs about 6lbs/gal.

Fritz Flynn 12-25-06 12:11 PM

buy light weight tires not those cheap heavy ass ecstas but some t1s toyo tires.

Probably 5lbs lighter per tire. Unsprung rotational weight is multiplied by 4 so if you loose 5 lbs per tire that's a 80lb reduction :D After that just leave the rest alone lol.

telum01 12-25-06 02:11 PM

replace all your nuts and bolts with titanium ones :)

He said remove them and OR switch them out with lighter parts. I'm guessing the steering wheel fell in to the latter category.

scotty305 12-25-06 06:36 PM

If you haven't already done this, a downpipe should be the first thing on your list, you can drop 10-15 lbs. After that, I would go with a lightweight battery; the Odyssey PC680 is about 20 lbs lighter than the OEM battery. The stock exhaust is heavy also, but don't remove your cat unless you've got an aftermarket ECU that can compensate for the increased flow. I haven't seen weight data for the OEM seats, but you can usually cut a lot of weight by switching to fiberglass or carbon racing seats (Recaro SPG, for instance). The jack and spare tire weigh about 30 lbs combined.
