Light flywheel... pros and cons
 

I'd like people's opinions of their lightened flywheels. I understand they are great for autocrossing, but what about drag strip.

Who has had what experience with launching with one?

Good? Bad? need slicks or DRs?

I'm getting a light flywheel......

11 pounds infact. I guess it helps with acceceration.

Mostly guys listing it as one of their mods. LOL jeez if you don't put a "I searched already" disclaimer in your post these days...

Anyway, I wanted specific opinions from guys who have used it at the strip and with what tires? Other than "It's great for autocross and daily driving but not at the strip."

I've heard the flywheel sucks at launching with street tires, but with slicks its much better. Or maybe with DRs?

I have 9.5 pound fw and I think its great.

their is almost no difference when launching. Just have to rev it a little higher when getting off the clutch for normal driving.

Launching you just have to feel it out know whats too little gas and whats too much and find a good middle point. So you dont bog and dont burn out all the way down the track.

Slicks are harsh on the car in my opinion, I prefer drag radials. I dont like to bash my car too hard.

12 lb aluminum flywheel here. first gear acceleration is SICK! from a 4k RPM roll in first, i can stomp on it and just spin the 245/45's all the way to 2nd. I dont really notice and added difficulty in street driving either.

Since I don't have a lightened flywheel, and have never driven a car with one, it is kinda hard for me to answer the question. I just remember reading a bunch of threads about them over the past couple months.

Thanks for the info. Hmm wonder how much diff 9.5 and 12 makes, if it's even detectable.

If you plan on doing any dragging with the car stay away from the lightenend flywheel. If your goal is autocrossing, it'll be beneficial. I did extensive research on this when I was considering getting one and found for most applications, the stock flywheel is your best option.

FWIW, My light flywheel didn't effect my drag times. As a matter of fact, my fastest time on stock seq twins was done with an 11lb flywheel. (11.6@118)

If it's possible drive a car with a lightweight flywheel. Unless you've had one, or driven one, you have no first hand experience and are relying on heresay. I was sold after I drove one. Just like a single turbo conversion, after driving it, I was sold, now I just have to buy one.

I like mine, the butt DYNO feels like it pulls harder in 1st and a little in 2nd.

I'm not so sure about 3rd, 4th, or 5th though. I seem to recall it pulled harder before in those gears.

Although, 4 months passed between the time I had the flywheel installed and when I could actually drive the car. (1st shop messed the car up, then I had it shipped to KDRotary to get it fixed.)

Overall, I like it. I didn't have much of a problem stalling the car from a stop after the 9.5lb flywheel was installed. My wife even drives it.
