Lets talk exhaust, yes exhaust...

My FD came with an Apexi N1 exhaust and a resonated midpipe. When I got the car, it had the silencer cap installed. Never bother to take it off since it sounded good. Today I got to really push the car for the first time. I notice that it felt sluggish so I figure I take the cap out. After a 3 hour fight I manage to take it out. Well the exhaust was way too loud for my taste but it made the car respond better so I liked that.

My last FD had a Greddy EVO exhaust and it was great. Not loud at all and a nice deep sound. I can't find this exhaust any more so I want something that will be quiter.... not as loud as the N1 I got but don't want to go the Racing Beat exhaust. It is way to played out and not the look I want.

I know Tanabe makes a exhaust that it is supposed to be quite but I also read that you can loose nearly 30-40hp with this exhaust so that's a no.

So, what exhaust will make the car quiter without going the Racing Beat way?

Custom. You will get the look, sound, and power that you want (as long as you ask around about what combinations yield what). You can choose your material. If you go to the right guy (fabricator), it will be cheaper, or at least a better bang for your buck, than all of those name brand exhausts.

MR_Rick 09-16-10 04:58 PM

That's what I was afraid of. I guess I can add a second resonator to the mid pipe.

JBarron 09-16-10 05:13 PM

Actually, that probably does make the most sense. Nothing to be afraid of, check out some local exhaust places.

1QWIK7 09-16-10 05:15 PM

lol the tanabe doesnt make you lose 30-40hp. I agree its a lot more restrictive than the other exhaust favorites but i dont think you'll lose that much hp. The hp loss is not even noticeable.

Plus i would love to sacrifice some hp for a tolerable sound. Sometimes i wanna just get in my car midnight and go for a cruise but i live on a dead end block, my PFS exhaust roars and i know my neighbors will complain.

Just about any catback is going to be quieter than the Apexi. Take a look at the HKS Carbon Ti. I had one for a while and really liked it. I only got rid of it as I was able to get my hands on a St. May's exhaust:

curacaosfinest 09-16-10 07:07 PM

i'd definitely say the Carbon-Ti

i have one on my car right now, and it sounds great...imho it sounds better than the other exhaust, its not crazy loud and its not restrictive at all

and its really something of beauty, the carbon muffler can, and titanium tip that gets that burnt color as u use it is really amazing

check it out

Budget?

A3VT UNLTD 09-16-10 07:17 PM

I was looking for the same...

I went with JIC magic full titanium catback with OVAL canister single tip...

All I can say is that I love the sound. deep, not noisy. I can listen to the radio without any problems and you can still hear the sound of the pipe.

On their website:

Spartan DE Ti (Titanium) features a full ultra lightweight titanium oval canister and a full ultra lightweight titanium piping. Each Spartan DE comes with a full 80mm piping and a high quality Titanium to keep the exhaust noise to a minimum. Each Spartan DE Ti piping features a 1mm thick exhaust piping wall to allow heat to disapate faster. To enhance that important exhaust tone, the oval canister aids in keeping the exhaust tone clean. Each Spartan DE Ti system features a ultra lightweight Titanium canister with either a single or dual exhaust tip (some applications may be a special order item). Ideal for the enthusiast that wants an exhaust with a low profile, yet craves for throttle response, a clean exhaust tone, true weight savings and performance found in no other exhaust system.

JIC was always one of my favorite exhaust (especially the dual tip) but never saw it or heard it. Got a vid?

A3VT UNLTD 09-16-10 08:27 PM

this is not my car... and it is not the oval... but is a JIC titanium. sounds louder than mine... but you get the point...

I dont have a video yet.. I guess I could record one over the weekend... :)

the dual is a special order and no longer available. JIC Magic Japan closed and the US office dropped the exhaust stuff and will be concentrating in suspensions... what they have in stock is what it is...

That's quieter than what I have. You can hear the engine over the exhaust. On mine you can't hear yourself think.

Metan 09-17-10 03:12 AM

and Fujitsubo Super Ti ?

Is that pop rivets holding the canister on?

Did you have any clearance issues with the large cannister on a lowered car?

Those are rivets holding the CF wrap to the cannister. The Carbon Ti is just the Hi-Power exhaust with the CF wrap and Ti tip.

The cannister is not really that big in relation to the car. There are much bigger ones around. ;) Here's a shot of my car when I had it installed:

Ive got the tanabe, but its not the fullcat back version, dont know why but its what came with the car. For the most part its nice and quite with a good deep sound til you start getting close to WOT, then its pretty loud. Its a little big imo and doesn't get the blueing coloration that others get.

Oscypek1007 09-17-10 02:31 PM

St mays shotgun all the way. Looks awsome and its quiet as racing beat.

MR_Rick 09-17-10 03:06 PM

^ where can I get it?

demon721 09-17-10 09:30 PM

i gotta agree i love the greddy evo i have that currently on my fd. i was planning on swappin but wasnt sure i love the way it sounds nice and deep and not ricey. ive been lookin at some systems but not to sure, i came across and obx system that sounded good not to loud i was suprised. but im in the same boat its hard to fine the look and the sound u want.

MR_Rick 09-17-10 09:50 PM

St. May's aren't made any longer so you have to find them used or on eBay.

Oscypek1007 09-18-10 09:10 AM

Got it new off ebay for 600 bucks. Came with a certificate and a manual but it was in Japanese so yea couldn't read it.

seandizzie 09-19-10 03:30 PM

Why do you not want to use a RB?

MR_Rick 09-19-10 03:44 PM

Not the look I want. Too stockish looking.

seandizzie 09-19-10 03:59 PM

funny, thats why I like mine.

I vote for a midpipe muffler/resonator if you want a deep sound with a single tip.
