lesson: dont let friends drive your car *pics*
 

so a good friend of mine whom i've known for years and years comes by today to drop off something.. however i wanted to hear waht my car sounded like.. so i asked hi mto drive it. i normally dont ask anyone to drive my car since i dont trust 'em.. however he's had a foxbody 5.0L mustang, and now a 2001 modded mustang GT and his dad drives an SS which he's driven a few times. i thought, no big deal i trust him he should know what to do..

WRONG!

he leaves a stop sign no more than 50yards away.. guns it in 1st.. okay no big dela.. i thought he'd let off.. instead.. he shifts into 2nd and the tail is wagging. wondering what he was gonna do.. he slams the brakes and well, the rear has no traction now.. fuck. i watch as my baby is spinning into my neighbours driveway.. keeps on going.. and going and finally.. into a wood retaining wall.

anyhow, needless to say.. i'm not very happy.. and my car is fucked up.

dumb of me? totally. i shoulda realized the majority of 'high power' cars he's driven have traction control and he ALWAYS leaves it on..

anyhow, if anyone familar with bodywork could please let me know the extent of the damage.. that'd be great.

ouch....that's gotta suck i have no clue when it comes to body work 'cept to bring it into several body shops for estimates, get the highest cost and tax your friend...

sounds familiar...a friend begged me. Since I've known him since 3rd grade, I figured why not.

Guns it in 1st and as soon as the second turbo came on-line (as he's making a turn) the rear spins around, he over corrects and ends up sliding the rear off the road thru gravel.

Scared the shit out of him, so I made him get out...he hasn't driven the car since that day or asked. Thanksgiving 2002. I/he was lucky.

I feel for you...damage looks pretty bad.

On another note you are about to find out how "good" of a friend this guy really is over the next 3-6 months. Wish you the best.

I had a friend spin my car when he slammed 2nd which I told him not to shift hard at all, especially while turning.... Yea he didn't listen and spun the car 180 degrees one way, then over corrects and goes 360 back the other way so he's facing oncoming traffic and nearly ran into a bus stop! Oh yea... he'll never drive it again... And last time someone drove my car the speedo sending unit popped out of the tranny and I lost MOST of my gear oil out of the tranny... They se a problem and do nothing!! Ignorant bastards!! NEVER again!!

well maybe i'm harsh in saying dont let friends drive your car. maybe it should be someone who's at least familar w/ high power cars w/ no traction aids :o sigh.. my mistake! argh..

i can imagine that this is gonna be quite costly.. rear PANEL... passenger DOOR.. broken tie rod.. dead falken rt651.. scratched enkei wheels.. omg.ggggggggggggggggg

been there. done that,, about the same amount of damage. the asshole fell asleep at the wheel(of all things)

i had a body shop in FL. it looks pretty close to a total. its atleast 6-9k in damage there, depending on the type of shop you go to, more the half the car has to be painted to match correctly. a top notch shop will most likely total the car. now if you are paying out of you pocket you might get away with finding a decent shop that will do it for 6k or so.

Man, that sucks. Beautiful VR paint too. I would seriously kill that person. The thing is you should never let anyone drive your car, no matter how "good" of a driver you take them to be. A wreck is ALWAYS a possibility, whether or not you're driving the car. I've said it before, but I wouldn't let God drive my car :angel:

In all seriousness, I had similar damage a while back. It was my fault for not knowing how to drive the monster. The total bill was in the $5k range (increased from ~$3.5k). There were someo ther things that they had to add on after-the-fact.

i haven't even let my best friend drive my car and i don't think i ever will considering the fact that i'm upgrading soon

It is what insurance is for. No big deal. Especially no reason to lose a friend or hold a grudge forever.


It's just a car. You can probably have your friend claim it on his insurance and not have to pay a dime.

That sucks man, I don't let my friends ride my bike or touch my car 'just in case.' It can really screw up a good friendship.

But, as for estimates, if they write it off, you can buy it back. Also you can fix it the 'right way', which is about 3-6K Cad (more or less). OR you could fix it the WRONG way for $500 bucks (pull it/cut it, weld it/bondo it up and spray it).

It helps if you have some friends in the body biz, you might get it done right for cheap. Sorry man. But it does look like there is no real suspension/frame damage.

Yea I would call that one a total loss. That is about the worst place to hit a 3rd gen. Being that it is a unibody. The rear would have to be cut and frankenstiened back together. Then you only hope they did a good job or it's going to be Bondo City trying to make it all look smooth.

A few months ago this may have been a total loss, but since KBB values for FDs have risen your insurance may fix the car. Best of luck returning it to its previous form.

Ouch! Yeah that is probably the worst spot to hit an FD. :( Turbojeff would be the best person to talk to, but I don't know how often he stops in anymore since he sold his FD(s).

I had the same thing happen to me. My idiot friend hit WOT around a corner.

Seriously, remove the bins and take a look at what you see. I'd bet that the brace that runs across the body is bent. The rear of the car is much more difficult to fix than the front.

Yeah dude. dont lose a friend over this. I mean ream him out(sure you have) but dont kill the friendship. Im really sorry for this. I hope you can fix your 7 or get enough insurance to buy a new one.

Your car was soooo clean before this happened... I have at least 5 pix of your car saved on my computer. I feel sooo bad for you.

I hope you have full coverage cause everyone says insurance will cover it but if its liability (like myself) then your in a little trouble. I mean not everyone can afford full coverage on this type of car (Its $250 vs $50 for me for example).
