So thats what your selling now huh?

dgeesaman 04-08-07 09:48 AM

It's interesting to see how the more recent pics at the bottom show that the knockoffs are getting hard to pick out. (of course that doesn't mean they function any better)

I agree Dave, kinda scary. I was looking to ebay for a Tial BOV, but decided against it. Now I'm really glad I did.

skir222, nope, not selling those. Besides, I only sell stuff to people who actually buy the parts :fart:

gracer7-rx7 04-08-07 01:21 PM

Same thing with the Blow Off Valves you find on ebay.

crazyrx7 04-08-07 01:39 PM

There will always be someone that wants to save a couple of bucks and buy the knock off stuff. They usually find out really quick that you get what you pay for when they pop their motor (I had a buddy that did that; he bought a HKS style wastegate off of a forum member installed it and when for a drive; needless to say the last reading on the blitz boost controller was 24psi and the wastegate never opened).

But this Thia ones are getting pretty good for looking like the real thing. I like that one pic of the diaphram; looks really cheap.

What scumbags. Wonder how effective or difficult it would be for a company like Tial to file a lawsuit against them for stealing the name? Not sure how patents and trademarks are regulated internationally. Anyway, anyone that wants to be a cheapass and buy one of those deserves to blow a motor. I strongly prefer Tial over most of the overpriced Japanese wastegates and blow off valves that are next to impossible to get replacement parts for.

As far as I know they aren't. There is no legal recourse against copyright etc in asia.

Just to play devil's advocate though, those fakies look amazing! LOL!

Seriously though, so much effort went into faking the real thing! Im amazed

That sucks Rich. I was going to buy 2 tial 44mm wastegates on ebay because of my boost creep problem but I don't know now.

dradon03 04-08-07 05:59 PM

^

Just goto a certified vendor.

It is crazy how much the fakes are made to look like the real thing indeed you would think they could put that much effort into making ti work the same.

I just wonder where Tial has there casting done.. wanna bet it isn't in US?

Look, throughout my work and related contacts I know the companies who make HKS and Greddy stuff. For a fact, I know both these brands are produced in thesame factory. I know we could buy thesame cores at this factory and we can have the HKS or Greddy but with no or another brand on it, casted endtanks, the works.

Sorry but it is shortsighted to think that companies in the US or anywhere else in the world, stating they make everything in house or local.

Many of them source their high price moulded/casted stuff in Asia and most of the time they need to release the designs or casting equipment for the free market because otherwise they will get the bill for the tooling.

We did thesame exercise with a Taiwanese company to have exhaust manifolds made;
We designed, CAD data, prototyped... send the prototype to them and tehyw ould tooland manifacture. Their quote stated that they would use our info to sell the product world wide but for us there was 15% reduction to make up for the competitiveness.

If we wanted a monopoly on the design and tooling we had to confirm on a yearly quantity of 10.000 pieces for each design.
Sorry but that ain't gonna happen. I agree, them taking over the name is a bridge to far but it's very well possible that this is just the company who makes them for Tial, and selling it for themselves.

The market for these products is not thousands and thousands of pieces big to go on and make casting moulds for every product... Even in Asia this cost a lot of money.

let them show the differences in function, reliability, response, spring rates, etc.. I will put money on it, it will not be that different.

It's totally understandable for TiAl to protect it's market and even more, it's name and reputation, but maybe these fakes aren't all that different after all..

Great post, definitely food for thought. Having said that, on my FD, I made sure I bought an authentic Tial gate. Wouldn't have it any other way. :icon_tup:

Speedworks 04-09-07 03:19 AM

Sure, it's your right to do so and ethically the correct way to go. Probably i was Tial (in this case) to research and develop, and soma Asian company to copy/produce it.
By buying the original product ou gve the credit to who deserves it.

It's like OEM grey import. It's original stuff...but then again..it's not

DomFD3S 04-09-07 10:47 AM

A lot of companies do the R&D here, and outsource production to another country, as the manufacturing costs are cheaper. Happens all the time.

Even they are made from a stolen design, it doesn't mean that they have the same standards of quality control nor is there after-purchase support.

True, that's why the comparison should not be done based on how the items look, but how they perform...
