Just ordered a brand new motor
 

This was mentioned in an earlier thread but I thought some of you would like to know that Ray at Malloy Mazda still has about 8 brand new motors (not reman) available for $4k each which list for $7k. They come with a 12 month/ unlimited mileage warranty and he'll give you $700 for a core. Ray said these are the only new motors available in the US and once these motors are gone he won't be able to get any more. Personally I plan to keep my rx7 for a long time so I thought this made the most sense for me in terms of reliablity and value of the car vs. putting a reman in or rebuilding it yourself.

Yeah, I got one of those from Ray in January, man is that thing pretty. And yes pianoprodigy, they are brand new engines. Can't wait till mine is back in and I break it in, still waiting for my GT35R kit.

That's probably the best thing to do if you want a motor that's going to last. But if Ray sells all those new motors, couldn't you make your own new one if you REALLY wanted to by buying each part new seperately (new rotors, housings, seals)? Price would be the only difference i guess.

You could probably build a new one with parts but I imagine it would be ungodly expensive when you're talking new eshaft, rotors, irons, bearings, etc.

Remans have new housings
 

Talked to Ray last week about the new engines vs the reman engines he sells.

I felt alot better about the remans when he told me that the remans ALL used NEW rotor housings - yeah - the e-shaft and the rotors would be used, but I don't think I care.... or should I?

4K for new + shipping I assume? vs 2300 for a Reman + shipping, I think those were the numbers he gave me...

my rebuild and port was 5k, a totally new engine for 4 sounds pretty fair!

While it's nice to have a engine with all new parts, I would never pay that much for one and don't understand why everyone is caught up with "new" engines. I'd rather build it myself using new parts. Why wouldn't you want upgraded coolant seals, apex seals, oil mods, coolant upgrades and ports? :confused:

Not everyone knows how to build their own engine, so for those who don't, it would be great to have a new engine. Also, I think most of us were under the impression that the remans came w/ reused housings...but tzbfwt cleared that up.

exactly my thoughts. all that money and you have a brand new stock engine that will last probably 70k. yay. if the stock motors were all so great, why do we all need new ones in the first place?

Very good point, esp. since the vast majority of FD owners lose their engine to blown apex seals (or other various seals...be it side, corner, coolant, etc), not damaged rotor housings.

It's 4k plus shipping but he's giving me $700 core so the effective price minus shipping is $3300. $2300 for a reman assumes your shipping your core back so essentially for another $1k you get a brand new engine. I know everyone has their own opinions concerning rebuilding vs. reman vs. buying a new motor but personally I don't have the free time to rebuild my motor nor do I think a rebuild motor will likely last as long as a new one. My motor with a blown coolant seal is 13 years old and lasted 75,000 miles so spending $3300 for another motor that will probably 10+ years is worth it to me.

My car has been down for like 5 months so I just want my car running and the engine that was in it was not rebuildable at all, it was a piece of shit. Thats the reason I went with the brand new engine, and when it eventually goes I will have good parts to work with for a rebuild.

Not to burst your bubble- but that would be a Possibly, what happens if you overheat it or break an apex seal and screw up the housing and rotor maybe not.

well then most of the parts would still be good, but yeah its possible some would could get messed up. But I am still glad that I went with the brand new engine. I wasn't just like "ooooo, new engine, must have", I discussed it with the guy helping me with my car and he advised after thinking over my situation that it would be the best way to go.
