Just how hard is it to find a rolling chassis in good condition? How much?
 
I've been really considering getting a 3rd gen RX-7 for a while now and I've just come to the conclusion that I'm not mechanically apt enough to really deal with all the problems the RX-7 can have - so I'm leaning towards doing a V8 swap for reliability reasons. And since I don't already own a rex the cost to buy everything and have the swap done are not too bad (compared to if I already had a rex and spent lots of money on mods for it then had to take a loss on all those mods done to it and then pay over $10K for the swap). So I was wondering just how hard it will be to find a quality rolling chassis ready for the swap for less than $6500 (preferably around the $5500 price range). I've noticed as time goes by more and more people are looking for rolling chassis so this is probably adding to the costs and making it hard to find quality chassis. Have any of you guys seen any good chassis in my price range - so I can get an idea of the probability of actually finding one worth the money.

You won't find too many in Lawrence, KS. Look on the Internet and be prepaired to fly and tow it home. Good luck these things are becoming rare. Read this post while you are at it, its mandatory for all first time posters.

P.S. V8 IS A JUICE, NOT AN ENGINE OPTION.

You don't have enough mechanical aptitude to deal with a few vacuum lines and solenoids but you want to do a V8 swap? Besides reading through the newbie sticky, I suggest you read www.torquecentral.com, and the Other Engine Conversions sub-forum on this site.

Thanks...technically that wasn't my first post (it should have been something like my 1xx post) since I hadn't logged on to this site for over 2 years I guess they temp. closed my account and now after I activated it they reset everything...what gives?

I wouldn't be doing the swap myself....the car would never run :p: I would have Hinson's do it then I would just worry about driving the hell out of it. :D

Gotcha. Give Hinson a call, they may be able to assist you in locating a chassis.

Thanks...I wasn't trying to be a prick or anything. I just love the way the FD looks but I don't want all the headaches that come with them. I just want a reliable 3rd gen (which to me means a FD with a LS1 swap) that I can use as my daily driver.

If you can't handle a FD with it's STOCK motor you aren't going to be able to handle it with a V8, unless maybe you buy it already converted.

If you keep the car relatively stock (on the stock motor), the car is just fine. However, as with ANY car, if you modify it you are just asking for problems.
