Just bought greddy FMIC...now what?

So I just picked up this greddy front mount kit for my FD. My car is all stock and I'm slowly getting parts and plan on doing one install. I plan to change my radiator to an aluminum one while old one is removed also. What else do I need for the install? This is all I got from the seller of the FMIC. Also there is an hks ssqv flange on the intake side of the intercooler pipe. Can I run a ssqv and plug my stock bov ?

You need brackets to move the radiator. The radiator will sit upright in the engine bay with the Greddy fmic. You'll also need to find some sort of intakes for the turbos as space will be limited when the rad is in the upright position. I'd also think of fabricating some sort of ducting to channel the air from the intercooler through to the radiator. And I think that you'll need to lengthen the radiator fan cabled and cut/trim the radiator feed hose.

Forgot to mention that you'll need to remove or cut the bumper support to fit the intercooler.

Ok is it possible to fit the A'PEXi intakes with this intercooler. I see pics of people with them installed but read that they don't fit without modification to them.

If you are going to modify your car, you need to have a plan ***BEFORE*** you start buying parts.

I do have a plan. Buy the basic bolt on's and reliability mods and install everything at once.

adam c 07-17-16 07:53 PM

A plan means that you actually know what you need ***BEFORE*** you start buying parts. This will mean doing a bunch of research before buying anything.

When you say: "what else will I need for the install?", or "is it possible to fit Apexi intakes" that clearly means you have not done your homework.

If you read the post you can clearly see I purchased this second hand and do not have the entire install kit needed. I am asking what else is needed. No need to make dumb comments. Thanks for your input.

H_M pretty much nailed it for you. Adding the FMIC is going to require a new intake, and a new battery mounting solution too.
Basically you have to change the position of the radiator to a more upright position. If you search for FMIC install threads and pictures, you'll get some idea of how this needs to be.
Any local FD shop could probably help you make something, or you may still be able to get pieces from Greddy.
Here are some similar, if not exact, install instructions: http://www.greddy.com/upload/file/12050054,55_i.pdf

As for AdamC's advice. Not to be rude, it does seem like you're in a bit deep. No worries, been there too.
Some will debate the benefits of FMICs in a car the requires such care with regard to coolant temps.
I'd recommend an upgraded radiator to go with it: Koyo, Fluidyne, Mishimoto...search around some.

Also, if you install a bunch of bolt on's you're going to exceed the stock boost and fuel management rather quickly.
These cars are scalpels, not hammers. Take due care, or you may wind up in the market for a rebuild.

Good luck with the parts pile. Take your time and do lots of reading. It's hard to do it right without learning some tough lessons on the way.
I know I've learned some the hard way

i am going to have to agree with adam on this. going front mount requires quite a bit of extra and supporting mods. theres going to be a lot "commotion" in your engine bay with going front mount. on top of that, with the stock twins on a stock ecu with stock boost youre just going to get a lot more lag from this. v mount or a larger stock mount is the best solution in your case. of course with as stock as your car is, i would suggest just leaving it as is honestly. the aluminum radiator, efini y pipe, fc thermoswitch, aluminum ast if you want to keep it and an aluminum smic like a greddy or re-a and call it good.

the basic of basic mods will not only help maintain your cars resale value but it will also keep it reliable.....ish. all stock cars like yours are becoming more and more rare. why mess with it?

Not knowing what you need indicates a fault in your plan. There are those running FMICs on a street car, but relatively few. You're screwing with crash worthiness, you'll need to do some fabbing and cutting and move the battery. To do it right IMHO, you also need a 99 bumper with a larger opening. And since you're sticking a heat-sink in front of the radiator and A/C condenser, you need cooling mods, some of which go beyond an aluminum radiator as mentioned. And you may have to loose A/C.
You asked what else is needed and Adam answered. Maybe he's not the one being "dumb".

Op, your car is pretty clean bro. I wish sometimes I left my car alone. I fear as I get older I will want it closer to stock more and more.

That being said, if you want to mod it go for it. You will need brackets to move the radiator vertical and the ac condenser as well for that matter. I may have the brackets actually, I bought the Rx7store vmic(pos) and it came with all the stuff in the kit that was unused. I'll have to look tho but I'm sure if you post a wtb thread in the fs section you'll get them. I don't think there will be instructions tho so it will still be a bit of a puzzle.

I ran a fmic unducted in sunny SoCal no problem for a couple years. If you KNOW your car is solid then it's not that big of a deal. The worse thing for the car was traffic, but then it doesn't matter which ic you have.

Good luck

Agreed. Maybe not totally stock, but agree.

Disagree. Yes it does.

GoodfellaFD3S 07-18-16 05:48 PM

I'd recommend against installing that FMIC. Look into SMICs at your power levels.

As already mentioned, you'll be hacking up your front bumper/rebar and hurting airflow on an already marginal cooling system.

Adam_C was right with his 'dumb' comments IMO.

Sorry you're not getting the input you want to hear, but you're off to a poor start on modding your FD. Have you spent time researching the forum at all regarding mods?

silverTRD 07-18-16 07:13 PM

I've heat soaked every ic setup I have owned. But you're right, my vmic heat soaked maybe 2 minutes later slower than fmic. LA traffic ain't no joke. Lol

I agree and I wouldn't be interested in the Greddy fmic for my FD, but some people like them because ricer.

Air to Air intercooler didn't work when sitting still? Say it ain't so!

silverTRD 07-18-16 07:36 PM

My point exactly. :-)

Not saying it'll tip over and catch on fire. But that FMIC doesn't make it any easier for the fans to pull ambient air through the radiator..
The air that does make it will have been heated by supercharged intake air.

Just sayin.

collectiv 07-20-16 03:30 PM

I have a greddy SMIC and gruppe CF intake .. along with all the piping .. 99 spec y pipe and elbow. Never installed any of it. Intake and SMIC were purchased from rx7 boutique.
For sale

Robbierx7 07-20-16 06:52 PM

I've just installed one of these myself. I'll link you to a site with tons of pics 2moz as I'm on my phone and away from my pc which it's bookmarked on. It's just what you need.

Not just the IC heat soak I'm concerned about. That can be helped with a few minutes of easy driving once you're moving again. But with a FMIC in stop and go, now the fans are trying to pull ambient air thru that heat soak to the radiator.

Yes of course, I completely agree. But a vmic isn't a mandatory mod. I ran a HKS fmic with zero issues, I upgraded because I wanted to start tracking. I don't have the mindset that everyone needs a vmount. I know if the car is healthy and setup properly a fmic will be fine, tracking is another story.

If some guys around here would have their way, everyone would have a 99spec FD with the same offset wheels, same turbo, same v mount etc only difference being color. Heaven forbid someone has different tastes. Haha (not directed at anyone in particular, just sayin).
