first of all I have to thank Fritz. He is the man and if you need parts he should be the first person to call and see if he has them. Very easy to deal with and he know a great deal about the fd's. So THANK YOU VERY MUCH FRITZ FLYNN. I have been looking for a glass roof since about the second day I owned my fd.

I recently did this, how did you align it? flat at the front/back/sides or flat at the 4 corners?

dvo 11-28-11 02:23 PM

I didn't even know they were rare until someone offered to buy mine.

nashman69g 11-28-11 08:59 PM

did you get the cover that goes into the clips on the glass roof?

I almost lost mine on the interstate when the rivets on the rear clips broke...still need to fix them.

Another happy glass roof owner.

I had a glass roof on my first FD and hated it. The car was silver and I always felt that the glass roof looked like a black panel and threw off the style. I guess it looks fine on a black car though - like how unpainted carbon fiber can look just fine on a black car.

I didn't get the cover that snaps in, that's probably another hard part to find. I am sure the biggest battle was deff finding the glass. I do have the cover on the bottom of the steel roof and thought I could fab something up. Really the only time I would use the cover is when it is parked, I always drive with it open except for when it is rainin. It would be nice to have it but I am not heart broken without it. You might ask me after the summer how I feel about not it and it may be a diff story.

In my experience it gets mighty toasty during the summer even with a white car. The factory tint is minimal. I picked up a cover from Fritz (great guy) for about $70 earlier this year so keep in touch with him.

I did some asking around before and it's about $50 to get the sunroof tinted if you can't source one. (Their about $500ish new from Mazda)

I know someone who made their own cover to slide into the glass sunroof. I'll ask him to post photos.

I would hate the glass sunroof without the cover. Don't know how hot it gets in Ohio, but the 100+ summer weather in Texas makes it a necessity. I know you said you would probably only use it when parked, but the factory cover opens with the sunroof anyway. So, unless you are just driving around with it slightly cracked open, you don't even notice it's there. Just my humble opinion.

We have a few hot days here in Ohio, of course it can 100 on one day and snowing the next. Most of the time its cloudy around here. I can say it will be easy to put steel roof back in it.

If you can get pics or some info on a cover that would be awesome. Thanks Theorie

I use it with no cover in PR Summer sun, I love it. I actually think the dot pattern shading is too dark :(

Fritz Flynn 11-29-11 01:47 PM

Thanks for the kind words, nice meeting you and I'll keep and eye out for the under cover.

I lived in Savannah GA for five years and never had a cover or wanted one. You will be fine I wouldn't waste money on tint.

My glass sunroof is stuck open. :(

anything i should know, outside of the service manual, in taking it apart to diagnose?

You can crank it closed manually. There is a plastic cover in the center of the headliner, toward the back of the car. That comes off and then you can manually crank the sunroof closed.

As for the cause, check the switch in the dome-light assembly. I know they are prone to having the contacts break.
