Jdm vs Usdm windshield

I'm wanting to replace the windshield on my car but I've heard just about every possible story regarding fitment of rhd vs Lhd windshields.

-they have a different curvature and you can't interchange them
-they have a different curvature but you can still interchange them
-they are the same

So does anyone know which it is? Can I go to a windshield place and have them replace it with a standard Canadian / American windshield or do I need to order one from japland?

Tem120 06-05-13 01:13 PM

I am pretty sure that they are the same curvature . and you can interchange them LOL

I dont see the point of making 2 different windshields for the same car doing twice the research in windtunnels mazda is to cheap for that =P

But if you have some information that would lead to you thinking otherwise atleast i'd like to hear about it.

Make sure you get the correct tint. Stock FD's are normally bronze tinted - Most non genuine replacements seem to be blue tinted.

I'd be amazed if USDM & JDM windshields were different.

Let us know if you find a source of anything besides a Blue tinted aftermarket windshield.

I recently replaced my FD windshield and no luck finding the correct for '93 VR bronze tint.

Like wise . I tried searching for the OEM one to . only place I found it was mazda comp . and at more then twice the price .

^Im not too convinced about that statement. As I dont think ive ever really noticed many FDs with bronze tint. In fact, both of my fd's had the blue tint on them and with the mazda logo. Which would indicate OEM material.

Coincidentally, I replaced my windshield in my current FD via an aftermarket vendor and I was given the choice of either bronze or blue as according to them both were factory replacements. I chose blue and of course it came without a mazda logo :)

Well, my '93 VR R1 has a faint Bronze tint on all windows except windshield which is a faint Blue tint.

The windshield this one replaced was also faint Blue tint.

Read the parts catalogs and see if there are alternate PN's for the windshield; by the way this is too trivial for me to research. As to curvatures, tint, fitment I would not be surprised of more than one OEM supplier, and US header tint line is unique to the world, as to fitment, there is only one body so they must be interchangble.

'93 USDM FDs had 2 different windshields, 2 side glasses and 4 hatches.

'94 had 2 different part #s windshields, 3 different side glasses, 1 side glass the same as '93 and different hatch.

'95 had 1 different windshield, 1 different side glass, 1 side glass the same as the unique '94 and same hatch as '94.

I would be surprised if there wasn't more options in JDM models since it was produced for 8 more years.

Different safety standards probably mean different JDM windshields as well.

They should all be the same shape and fit in the unidody the same.

Coincidentally, I replaced my windshield in my current FD via an aftermarket vendor and I was given the choice of either bronze or blue as according to them both were factory replacements.

Could you please tell us when that was and through what supplier? I had several vendors hunting for Bronze tint and none were in stock.

the JDM parts catalog shows the same FD01-63-900 and FD15-63-900 windshield part numbers as the US catalog.

i only see that there is an FD01, FD15, and FD31 part numbers, roughly 93/94/95 the only one that isn't NLA is the FD15

Tem120 06-06-13 11:45 AM

The reason I wanted the OEM one was because on my miata . the OEM windshield had no tint at all , While the aftermarket ones all had tint since my line of sight coincided with the very top of the windshield I opted for the OEM one as I hopedi t didnt have the tint . but that was the only reason . since I couldnt get it , + lowered bucket seat my LOS is under the tint now and It doest not bother me .

problem was not weather it was brown or not I just wanted one without tint . but then since they all had it I just went with the cheapest option which is dark blue tint

But if you are tall and your LOS is right at the edge the bronze tint seems to be easier to see through then the blue .

Yes, I meant the original part numbers. As in, what the cars came with from the factory, not what is available now.

All Star glass on 5812 Miramar Rd San Diego, CA 92121.

I don't think they are there anymore but it's my understanding that there are multiple locations

In the parts catalog for '93 I see listed-

FD01-63-900 GLASS, WINDSHIELD INAC

FD01-63-901 GLASS, WINDSHIELD

I realize the first part # is inactive.

That second '93 one wasn't used (listed) for '94 or '95 models.

All Star glass on 5812 Miramar Rd San Diego, CA 92121.

Thanks! How long ago was that?

I'm going this Wednesday to get my broken OEM 1992 JDM windshield replaced. The glass company has got a replacement in, AUD $350.00, plus AUD $45.00 for the rubber outer seal around the perimeter.

No idea if its going to be blue tinted or what. (My stock one appears to be bronze tinted from factory I think.) Fingers crossed this goes well. I'll probably come back and post opinions/comparison of OEM VS aftermarket glass once its done. I know I'm in Australia, but I would bet that the aftermarket windshields are a globally universally manufactured item.

My stock windshield seems very soft- IE lots of fine pitting and rash. Along with the usual greasy film of something smeary on the inside that no amount of glass cleaner can ever totally remove. I'll be glad to get rid of it.

Mitchocalypse 06-11-13 09:09 AM

^thats same as mine.. Really pitted and generally just annoying. Im pretty sure it's bronze tinted but frankly I don't care as Long as I get a fresh one.

Some place in town has one in stock so I'm guessing a few other vehicles use the same one.

SA3R 06-12-13 11:18 AM

Mine was replaced today. Unfortunately I dont know what the branding of the aftermarket glass is- there doesn't seem to be any branding anywhere on it.

As far as I can see, it is not blue, and not bronze. Appears to be neutral color difference, colorless.

My original bronze factory glass never had a sun strip fader across the top of the glass. This new glass does have a sun strip incorporated, and it is much nicer for it.

The black border around the edge of the glass is a bit wider than the original. I think this is a plus too.

Installer took his time, and noted that the pinch weld area under the old glass was in perfect condition, no rust under there. He primed the spots where the cold knife cut the paint inside the pinch weld channel part too, preventing future rust.

The installer charged me AUD$350.00 to supply and fit the glass. He also used a brand new sealing rubber around it, at no extra charge, and washed and vacuumed the car before handing it back. I was very impressed with the work, and the fact that the new sealing rubber was much better designed than the original Mazda rubber too.

All in all, I am sort of glad that the rock destroyed my old glass. The work today was an improvement to the car. And no more smeary interior side of the glass!!!
