JDM transmissions
 

Has anyone ever purchased one off of ebay? To be honest i usually would trust ebay for most things. But getting something that is very susceptible to wear and tear such as an transmission is kind of worrisome. I need a new transmission in my rx and i dont wont to pay 1200 to have mine rebuilt or more. I have a local friend who will drop my old one and install a new one for 200. I figure its definitely the better route if I can feel comfortable purchasing one of these jdm transmissions.

Also do they just bolt right up? and is there any difference in the gearing?

Yes they are direct bolt ups (no modifications). However, if you really need/want one, purchase from a reputable seller. Contact "Japan2LA" here on the forums.

Some of the later ones have a single synchro where the 93-95s have double cone synchros, however I don't think that's a big deal.

I agree condition is everything. I personally would buy a used JDM transmission but only if I could see it in person and remove the lower cover before paying over my money. Hopefully there is an importer in your area.

I'm using one in my car, VERY pleased with it.

Most of the transmission wear is simply from mileage. Lower mileage trannies will typically be in better shape, and most of the trannies you'll see from Japan will have 40,000 miles or something.

It's an excellent way to go, as you can get one for $300-400. As stated, it's a total bolt-in, the transmission is identical. I would make sure all the sensors and wiring on the tranny are in good shape, the connectors and wiring can sometimes get mashed up in shipping.

Just bought a jdm transmission off japan2la, So far its been working out great, shifts so smooth and everything is as he said. He even delivered it locally!

Great seller, cant go wrong with him.

Might be a stupid question, but I read that the JDM transmission has a different final drive gear/synchro, which isn't faulty like the UDSM ones.

The question is, is that ALL JDM transmissions or just a certain year?

Some of them have a different 5th ratio, but I'm not sure exactly which ones. If you download the JDM parts catalog you can figure that out.

What's faulty about the USDM 5th ratio? I've never heard it described that way. The USDM 5th is just a lower ratio designed for better highway cruising.

i think he is referring to everyone that keeps asking if there is a fifth gear grind or not.. not really faulty, just worn out..

Oh, sorry -- to clarify this is what I meant.

I don't remember who, but someone posted and said that if you were having 5th gear synchro problems that getting a JDM FD tranny would be the solution to your problem.

I wasn't sure if this was correct or not, so I thought I'd ask.

Yes, the newer transmissions already contain the updated 5th gear synchro.
