JDM Cluster vs. USDM Cluster
So I need to buy a manual gauge cluster to complete my auto to manual swap, but all I can find for sale is JDM Clusters. What are the differences? Will they work on a 93 US FD? I assume the mileage will be in kilometers...could I use my current mileage computer? What else will be different about them?

Erica you can get a USDM one from Mazda Recycling out in Rancho Cardovia,Cali. Toll free 1 877 280 3100
I have bought from them. Nice people and fast shipping. Good luck. -Dave |
Awesome, remember how much you paid?
Any clue on retaining mileage? Thanks for the speedy reply. Dang, called and they have one but it's missing the tach. Any other places? |
You might want to send a PM tyo Fritz Flynn. He is a member here that parts out 3rd gens on a regular basis. He is likely to have one.

Wow, a new gauge cluster lists for $1700....it's still $1100 through Mazda Motorsports! |
Would it be cheaper to go aftermarket?
|
Yeah screw that. I've been going through old posts about the wiring and if you really need the manual harness and cluster and I see some people say you don't. But I halfway think it would be easier to do if I had those... OMG The auto to manual swap is the worst idea I ever had LOL Anyone who lives in SC, FL or GA who has done this want to give me a hand in exchange for money? Everything's done except for the speedo doesn't work.

If there even was an aftermarket plug and play gauge cluster. The only one that even comes close that I know of is teh mazdaspeed one. I think that is about $800 |
BTW, the components in the cluster are separate - if you just need a tach, get a used tach and swap that in.

JDM speedos will work with 93 manuals (as long as pre 99 model clusters). bad thing about JDM cluster is that it only read upto 180KM/H (about 115MPH).
I have a 93 cluster for sale.. if you need it. I think 120+K |
I'm w/ Dale on swapping out the tach. But if you want a full gauge cluster, Phil (Herblenny's) a great guy, I'd take him up on his offer, or check Fritz as per FD3Boost's suggesstion. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an array of clusters w/ different mileage :p:
Phil, I'm pretty sure the speedo can be recalibrated so that the markers on the 180KM/H actually represent 180mph...so it would be just like a stock US speedo. Just ignore the kmp sign in the middle ;) What I'd like to know is, in such a situation where you're going to swap tachs, is there a way to modify the odometer so it reads what your old odo read? |

Thanks for the tip Dale. Just seems like it would be even harder to find just a tach for sale. If I did that, wouldn't the speedo still be off since my rear end was switched to a manual?

I wanna marry you! your a girl w/ the same color/year 7 I have! OMG!cept mines manual, but I can ask around, there is one guy parting his car out

LOL Mine's been manual for two years, just the speedo doesn't work

Erica,
One thing to keep in mind. You might want to ask a dealership or a repair shop about a speedo replacement sticker, or miles of paperwork to backup the replacement of the speedo and any corresponding differences in mileage. I am in GA as well and know first hand how sticklers they can be, ie mileage discrepancy. The laws are there for good reason, but just something to keep in mind. If possible, keep the old speedo or whole cluster as proof of changing, documented and possibly notarized papers stating "at xxxx miles, the speedo was changed, with the starting mileage on the new speedo at xxxx miles." I know this sounds a little anal retentive, but the DMV somtimes gets a kick on finding any reason to piss off or delay someone. The car can be sold some day as TMU, or true mileage unknown, but that is just more arsenal for someone looking to buy your car to say the car is in unknown condition or truthfulness, and so you shald take xxx amount less, blah blah blah. Of course, this is just in the event you ever sell your car, of no consequence now, lest you know THE 7 NEVER LOSES!!! :D Cheers, Travis |

Oh and Travis is def. right about making sure everything's switched over officially, and documented by DMV or whoever down there, so the title retains the "true and accurate" mileage statement. |
JDM speedos' read KPH and US speedo's read MPH, but they both register 180. So technically, would a JDM cluster read correctly if used in a US car with US drivetrain
(i.e. - US speedo gears) ? |
