JDM 99 transmission - how much "better"?
 

the FD I bought came with JDM 99spec transmission. I don't even know if there is such a thing as 99spec tranny but i know for a fact it's a JDM transmission since the gear ratios are shorter (at 80mph 5th gear, i am around 3500rpm)

Anyway, i understand many usdm transmission have a lot of synchro problems so is JDM tranny much better in this regard? For now, my transmission is shifting smooth like butter through all gears.

As my previous was a 93 and now I have a 00 FD, there isn't a great world of difference to be honest. You obviously dont get the 5th gear crunching problem and being newer, it is definately very very smooth shifting, and thats without any Neo tranny fluid in it.

Its the same tranny. The later JDM market tranny used a shorter 5th gear resulting in higher revs in 5th.

Yeah, the only real advantage to JDM trannies is they're normally MUCH lower mileage, and later models will likely have updated parts in them, like the newer 5th gear synchro. Miles and abuse are what wear a tranny down.

I have a JDM tranny in my car, shifts like buttah.

Actually there may be just a little more to the 99+ trannys. I'll know more next week and post to this thread, but suffice it to say I suspect it's a small difference in internal design.

Might mention, countershafts, bearings and spacers at least changed within the so called "99 spec" series based on chassis number - then you can add in all the other possible changes in earlier and later models as well.
