Issues with Hawker PC680........Resolved !
 

Okay, I've been having charging issues since winter hit. Today, I finally called Oddyssey and asked them what was up. My PC680 is only about 7 months old has been used for maybe half that time.

Problem 1 : Driving short distances which doesn't allow battery to fully recover. I knew this was a problem as I do a lot of short distance driving.

Problem 2: This is what I found out today. I've been borrowing a Battery Tender 12V 1.2 amp charger (Thank you Jack) ;) to see if I can fully charge the battery. Well, I haven't had much success for the past few weeks. Still drags more than it should.

Bruce at Oddyssey explained to me that this battery is millitary grade and can be totally discharged and brought back to life 400 times !!! So, after talking it over, he's telling me that the charger IS the problem.
With the 1.2 AMP it's only bringing the PC680 to approx. a 50-60% charge !! Hellllllllo........that's ma prob. It's not deep charging. Rather, it is only surface charging and giving a false reading of a fully charged battery.

In order to keep a deep Fully Charged PC680 you need at LEAST a 12V 6 AMP charger. Battery Tender makes one and he says that will solve any charging issues without a doubt.

So, to end all the discussions about the PC680 not being able to last, this should answer that question.

get one which can charge at 15, 30 and 100 amps :)

As long as you don't overcharge. Oddyssey suggested the 6 AMP type chargers as they also automatically reduce the charge when it's nearing capacity. Too much charge will kill it. Not sure if high AMP's are good for the battery.

I've been thinking of getting a quick disconnect neg. battery terminal. That way I can just disconnect the battery while the car sits in the garage for an extended period.

The factory alarm will drian my PC680 in around 4-5 days if the car sits parked.

What do you guys think?

Just get one of the 12V 6AMP chargers listed above and you'll be set. This way, you'll be ensured that your battery is deep charged.

I would think it would be a pain in the ass if you had a clock or something that requires a memory....ie radio settings etc...

i think the factory alarm draining your battery in 4 days is wrong unless its hardly charged. i think you have another problem somewhere else such as a drain

Not necesarily. His battery could be like mine. Running at 50-60% charge due to short distance driving. Then, having the factory alarm drain on it overnight......booyah...dead PC680.

Exactly what is happening to mine. A charger will eliminate all those probs.

jpanes if ur car is draining after 4-5 days, its something else...I have a PC680 and will not drain even after 3 weeks...:)
