Intermittent Wipers Broke

Hi,

suddenly my intermittent windshield wipers have stopped working. They no longer park at the bottom of the screen either.

I've read about this problem on 2nd gen but not 3rd gen. What is the quickest/best way to fix this?

Thanks

Same here, do you have to pull the arm and replace it ??

Jim Calandrella 02-04-04 01:01 PM

Mine don't work either.
They'll come on under full throttle at 130 though......
That's usefull. :rolleyes:

haha i'll have to try that! They work at the continuous speed ok. Does anyone know if i replace the stalk switch whether this will fix it?

ijneb 02-04-04 04:58 PM

Mine only work on constant, one speed.
I'm tagging along too.
=D

Kaotic Dan 02-04-04 05:08 PM

Mine too!

ZoomZoom 02-04-04 05:40 PM

Mine as well

mr_tim 02-05-04 03:05 AM

so it's a common thing then! Anyone got a fix?

kingcornflake 02-05-04 07:42 AM

I think that there is a fix in the Mazda Techbook for 3rd gens.

I will look that up and post it tomorrow.

cheers
Patrick

i'll lokk but i thought the intermittent controller was seperate from the switch. i'lll look at some wiring and hopefully help. i cant belive this many people have this prob. is it because so many of us only drive the car in good weather?

Jim Calandrella 02-05-04 11:21 AM

Mine starting going after the car sat for 5 weeks while it got a new motor done at KD.
Something corroded.
I think Dave maybe even rold me what it was, but i've since forgotten.

wonder1and 02-05-04 11:50 AM

Mine too... only constant speeds work... :wtf:
must be a common problem for this many posting within a couple of days.

BRADYMAHONEY 02-05-04 12:01 PM

Mine too. :(

BRADYMAHONEY 02-05-04 12:04 PM

But it works when I turn my steering wheel about half a turn. I would forget I had it on, and then it will make a swipe when I turn sharp enough to pull in to my parking spot. My hi and low speeds work fine.

Jim Calandrella 02-05-04 12:12 PM

Mine come back to life from time to time as well.
It appears that the sensor that controlls my intermittent wiper speed has gone intermittent.

DCrosby 02-05-04 02:07 PM

Perfect ! Put a delay on that delay ! :confused: :D

bladz311 02-05-04 04:52 PM

mine only work when i use my turn signals... hmm

I had that problem for the longest time & fixed it a few months ago... only work full on or off. Ends up one time when I had my gauge hood off it pulled out this little black wire with a white 2 pin connector on it. I didn't notice it was pulled out till the next time I had the gauge hood out. That controls your wiper speed. Check for that wire and see if its plugged in, fixed my problem.

Good luck
Chris

Here the promised Techbook answers:

Intermittent operation not possible (but fast/slow is)

- Switch failure
- Intermittent operation relay failure

Cure:
- Check wiper/washer switch

Delay on intermittent operation is not adjustable

- Switch failure
- Intermittent operation relay failure

Cure:
- Check wiper/washer switch

Automatic repositioning of wipers does not work (wipers stick on the windshield)

- Wiper motor failure
- Switch failure
- Electrical circuit failure (interruption of an electrical line)
- Bad contact issue

How to check the wiper/washer switch

- Deinstall steering column console (the ones with the boost gauge in it)
- Pull off connector of the wiper switch. That should look like the following scheme; letters mean wire colors:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
] L/R ] GY ] B/Y ] Y ] G ] X ] B ] L/W ] L/B ] L/O ] B ] L/Y ]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
] GY/R ] W/L ] R/Y ] R/W ] R ] W/G ] L/G ] Y/R ] B ] O ]
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The important pins to do the check are sitting in the first row on right hand side:

L/Y = a
L/O = b
L/B = c
L/W = d

There is also one in the 2nd row:

L/G = e

Now follow the table below; the trick is check on current between the given pins.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Switch position/ Pin
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wipers:

OFF (MIST off) -> a + d

OFF (MIST on) -> c + e

INT -> a + d

SLOW -> d + c + e

FAST -> c + e

Washer:

ON -> e + b

If one of the combinations doesn't work you need to change the switch.

Hope that helped.

cheers
Patrick

Thanks for that, man!

mr_tim 02-09-04 03:53 AM

does any one know if the Intermittent operation relay is part of the column mounted wiper switch or is it located somewhere else?

Thanks

mr_tim 05-18-04 09:17 AM

Hi I swapped the column switches. It didn't fix the problem. Any more ideas on where the wiper relay could be?

thanks for the heads up - i'll take a look later on!

I've taken a look and it was very secure in there. I guess the search continues...
