intercooler upside down?

3 Attachment(s)
ok, im in the process of doing my own v-mount but found that my intercooler will only fit when upside down (maybe its right side up but all the pics ive seen are opposite of what i have). my intercooler is like the one in the first pic.

i have the inlet/outlet towards the front of the car rather than towards the engine (as shown in second picture) this is the only way it will fit because of my intake mostly. i just wanted to double check to see if having my current setup will be ok (with proper ducting and all) before i finalize everything.

thanks guys and here is a pic (3rd one) of what i have got so far. dont mind the relay box and zipties...relay is going be relocated and getting aluminum AST in a couple of days.

I am sorry, but I cant personally help you with your project, but i can offer some advise.

Change the CHEAPO blue connectors that you are using, they came with that eBay intercooler piping kit.

Well they pop like a thick balloon when they get some heat and pressure on them.

This was at 9psi on a friends FC, but have seen a few others blow apart.

Hi,i did the exact same think!Everything works just fine ,you only have to know a few things,1)inlet & outlet holes have different diameter and if you are going to use a big turbo you have to make the outlet hole bigger cause wont support enough pressure.
2)with stock twins you wont have a problem but due to shorter pipes you will have more boost and you ll have to re-tune the car.

thanks man, i am running on stock twins and planned on taking my car to a local tuner anyway. i feel better about this now. he he

just a couple, from many, options i can choose here in Japan....not including local shops. plus its faster to get the items. Ebay is inexpensive and easy to shop though, i understand.

but i will keep an eye on the connectors just in case. hopefully they wont be a problem.

it will work but I don't think its the best option.

By placing the inlet/outlet up front by the bumper, the IC winds up being mounted at less of an angle (making it more parallel to the ground) in order for the pipes to clear the hood. This makes it a little more difficult to get air through the IC.

I use the Greedy F mount and placed it with an 45% degree angle which fits exactly, maybe i did nt said it before but for this set up to be effective a duct should be made to guide and force the air through the intercooler and the radiator !

I'm sorry but I would question whether that 45 degree angle is correct. You may want to re-measure with a more accurate instrument. The IC is too deep and wide to fit at that angle. I tried using my old Greddy FMIC before I decided to use my M2 Large IC instead so I could get more angle.

As for ducting, my experience has been different. If you have a decent enough angle to the IC (and radiator for that matter) and it is getting air flow through the core, it will continue to work efficiently. If you don't have a sufficient angle, it will be harder to get air through the core w/o air guides or splitter as you used. Take a read if you like:

i think your setup's nice and clean. seems like it fits perfectly right now. flipping the IC around isn't necessary because you're not using a FMIC core and your intake would get in the way. I really don't see the need for your setup to change. only reason to have shorter pipes is to increase boost response but any vmount setup is already shorter than all FMIC setup. by flipping the IC around and modifying your piping it won't really make too much noticeable difference. As long as you have a well vented hood, having the pipes crossing over the intercooler is totally fine. shouldn't heat soak the pipes much if any.

I don't disagree my friend but with the ducting it's better cooled in lower speed,as for the angle maybe its not exactly 45 degree but it's close ...take a look at duct angle

nice junky "rubber" non-reinforced hose.

Here's a tip for you

SAQ - Thanks for the pic. Very nice work.

No doubt that ducted is technically better. However, a lot of people on here often say that you *NEED* ducting for a vmount which isn't true as my results have proven to me. Will ducting help it further, potentially. By how much no one really knows yet. I'm going to be ducting mine soon and then I'll have some more empirical data on how much of a difference ducting makes.

If you've noticed i'm living in Greece and here for about 8 months we have temperatures above 35 celsius, and it's very hard to keep low air & water temperatures ,actually the reason to convert from front to v-mount were the water temperatures, which now since the radiator takes fresh air ,are very low and with a great difference from before.
