Intercooler Question
 

Hey everyone! Im thinking of upgrading my intercooler, I was looking at rx7store.net and saw they have the Greddy Front Mount 2 row intercooler. I want it basically
to have fun on the street, is this intercooler good for an appplication,.it says to stay below 15psi which I think it will. Here is a link: http://66.216.67.51/product.asp?0=215&1=301&3=417

I also want to know if there will need to be any cutting of the bmper and any adjusting of anything else. Will it be bolt on or not? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure cutting is required, repositioning AC componets and radiator is required...maybe a few other adjustments too.

Well what are your overall preformance goals?
if they arent like everyone elses "500rwhp with single" then you could probably get away with a cheaper and little easier to install SMIC like the M2 units or Greddy also has a SMIC
However if you are looking into FMIC you should maybe check out the Blitz model, its slightly more expensive but fitment is a little better (i.e. easier install due to the fact that it sits back farther in the car so requires less bumper cutting etc) and alot of people who have it much prefer it over the Greddy

The blitz fmic doesn't require you to take off your front bumper. It goes in the engine bay right in front of the rad. Do a search for blitz fmic and there will be some pics of it installed.

GReddy Type 24 V-spec (2-row) all the way, cuz that's what I have LOL :)

15 psi is this core's optimal cooling efficiency and a good match for stock or '99 J-spec twins.

If you're upgrading to a big single turbo, the Type 32 V-spec (3-row), would be the way to go for maximum air charge cooling (with boost pressures well into the 17-20 psi range). 3-row is the biggest IC core, bigger than Apexi GT delta fin, HKS, and Blitz (those are all comparable to the GReddy Type 24 V-spec, 2-row).

I am of course biased but even without bringing up performance keep in mind that you're looking at 12+ hours to install the front mount if you have the tools and know how to wrench. With an SMIC (of course like the ASP's ) you're looking at about 1 1/2 hours to install, no cutting etc. Either would likely exceed your needs as outlined in your post above.

I think it depends on what turbo set up you plan on running. See i plan on the Apex RX-6 turbo but i dont know if the Greddy FMIC piping and the turbo piping will match up. Thats why i think i am stuck with the Apex FMIC. I guess i could have custom pipes made thou.

damian's track car uses Apexi Rx6 single with ASP medium (or large...can't recall)...

Here are my goals, I am probably going to upgrade to the bnr stage 2 twin turbo setup sooner or later, I don't think I will need more than 15 psi. My goal is 400rwhp and I don't think thats that far off with my mod plans. I am kind of set on a fmic, I LOVE the way the FMIC looks on an fd. It would be a crime to deprive myself of looking at it every morning. Exactly what mods are needed to fit the FMIC? Shaving of the front bumper (not much I hope :( ) and the thing that scared me is the movement of some ac components. That doesn't sound too nice. Let me know if theres any other way, and how does the blitz intercooler look?

yeah, but how hard is it? Can I do it myself?

I do beleive cutting is required but just a little, repositioning the radiator is required, however instead of repostioning your ac condensor, remove it...weight reduction, and while your at it remove the power unit as well. This would be about a 40 lbs weight reduction, and just get a smaller belt you will also pick up about 5 hp as well just from that, not to mention 20 more from the intercooler!

nonono, Im form miami, I cannot remove any ac components or my car will become an Oven on wheels. Is relocation very difficult?

For GReddy FMIC, no A/C components get moved. Power Steering lines get re-routed. It's a big job to convert to FMIC, no doubt, but worth it in my opinion.

Hey sleepr1, when you converted how long did it take you? Did you do it yourself?
