Intake temp difference
Hey guys I have this thing about the intake temp, what is a good intercooler and what would the Intake Temp be. When using the Pfc what is a good efficent intercooler and a good intake temp reading in a twin turbo setup?
|
It depends on the ambient temps and the usage. There many good intercooler setups, all of which have pros and cons. Please do a search for FMIC vs SMIC vs v-mount...this has been discussed ad nauseum.

Intake temps should be below 40C in most circumstances.

-Max Ha! Maybe in Alaska. The air filter inlet air would be over 43 here and an IC can never cool down to amibient. I think an intake temp of 56 C is good |

Location of your air temp sensor makes a difference. In the stock location under the UIM, it heats soaks there and gives false higher readings . Move it to the IC outlet neck or throttle body elbo. Heat report from Houston. Yesterday afternoon the air temperature was about 35-36C/96-97F, driving in slow traffic of 35-45mph, my engine air temp was 39C/102.2F, and water temp was 87C/189F. I have a FMIC. |
Agreed ^
Since I moved my IAT (intake air temp) sensor to the output neck of my FMIC I seldom see IATs of over 40C in normal daily driving. It is interesting that I was checking some things yesterday and had run a datalogit log, the results are real close to Chuck's Yesterday was 92 F/34 C here in lovely southern Illinois with a humidity of about 80%. In town coolant temps never exceeded 88 C (although in slow traffic and at idle I was looking at 84-86 C) as measured by my PFC and 191 F as measured by my Nordskog digital coolant gauge. IAT's were between 35 and 36 C / 97 C. (point of interest... sometimes it appears my IATs are LOWER than ambient temp by 1 or 2 degrees C. I really need to get some time to check that out more closely). Running down the road at 90 mph after a couple of good spirited accelerations at .93 bar/13.5 psi to raise the temps I saw 208 F/93 C coolant temps and IATs were around 41C/105F. |
