Intake Setup
 

Well i have been searching for the past hour or more(I have learned to use the search tool;)) and have been looking for the best intake kit to buy:wallbash:. There are so many mixed thoughts and so many good companys(m2) are gone and alot of the post are out dated. I am going to be on the market for a intake set up and i am looking for the most free flowing and that keeps the intake temps down the most. But the trick is, a company still exsiting that has its intake still on the market and can fit a aftermarket stock mount ic. Was reading and had a post that the stock air box had the coolest cruising speed intake temps out of the m2(gone which had better idle temps and close to the stock box) and the pettit(which scored almost 30 degrees hotter intake temps than the stock box). I really just want to free up room and allow the air to flow better but without the cost of hot intake temps. I was looking at this http://fighters-garage.com/rx7.html set up because it is pretty cheap and has hard piping and k&n filters along with a heat shield(looks better than the pettit setup and alot cheaper). I really want a quaility piece i really dont like the idea of foam filters(hks ect). Was looking on http://www.fd3s.net/ too and alot of those post were old and alot of those companys they tested are gone and the info was not clear. If you guys wouldnt mind throwing a couple opinions i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

My mechanic does a nice setup using a ram air effect. He likes the enclosed box to keep the air much cooler than the expensive brands which use hot air. Oh yeah, and its a lot cheaper too. His website mentions the PFS intake, but I'm not sure if they still make them because I believe he fabricates his own using the same design now.

adam's intake mod works well, im using it in my fd. the m2 one is nice too (and the design is still in production somewhere) but doesn't make use of air coming from the stock front scoop.

If you are going to run the stock IC, I would just go with Adam's kit.

Yea i might just go with his intake. I wanted to take out the box and have just filters but after all the results i have seen overall they are worse than a stock box. Right now i am running the stock intercooler but want to get a aftermarket smic eventually. I didnt want to buy a intake and it not be compatible with aftermarket smic. So when i get some money up after i spent so much in the past week and need a rebuild(bad coolant seals and turbos are going:icon_no2: ) i should be hitting you up adam. Thanks guys

i noticed there is a pipe connecting the intake box to the intercooler duct. not really sure if that is a good idea. i remember reading an article where mazda discovered that having the stock intake connected to the intercooler duct can actually reverse the airflow though the intercooler at high rpms. this means hot air from the engine bay can get sucked backwards though the intercooler, reversing the effect of what intercoolers are supposed to do.

i like the M2 airbox the best. thats what i have on my car. it draws cool air from the gap between the body and the radiator, so it's not stealing any air from the intercooler duct or the engine bay. its probably one of the best performing aftermarket intakes for that reason. i have the carbon fiber M2 airbox in my car.

I saw the sr intake but dont like the idea of the aluminum box, I think that would just heat soak.

^Thanks for that info so really it doesnt matter which intake i get because the air it is taking in is going to be hotter once it gets out of the turbos so there for a cold air intake is useless and the real thing i should be looking for is a high flow setup and a bigger intercooler(looking at the pfs medium) but a cooler intake temp can always help. So has there been a test which intake setup flows the best(m2,hks,pettit,ect) and the the most hp gain and the intake temps? I know that is alot to ask but i would think someone has this info. There was a test a few years back which floated around the net. However, the source of the test was never identified and the results were a little "sketchy" to say the least.

Most of the intakes flow well enough to not make that much of a difference. It really comes down to the look you want in the engine bay as well as what will fit with your IC setup. If you are thinking of the PFS SMIC, I would suggest just also going with their CAI for the whole setup.

its ugly, i just made my own intakes and bored holes in the piping i got. i am going to use it with a custom shield and a duct that i'm molding into the floor pan. i'll let you know the result
