Installing a manual tranny
 

The manual calls for the BU switch to be removed when installing the transmission. I am about to tackle this job now and wanted to know is it absolutely important to remove the passenger side back up switch before installing the unit ? Will it be destroyed if left in ?


Also what do most folks use to get the synthetic gear oil pumped into the case ?

1) the backup light and the other 2 sensors typically have very brittle wires and must be removed with the utmost care. If you try to unscrew them, then untwisting can break the wires, but if you leave them in, a good bump could break the wires. I left mine in, but only after having wrapped them good in silicone tape.

2) Start with warm oil - keep it in the warmest part of the house. Then a 1/2" clear vinyl tube, run up past the oil filter is how I fill it.

I learned the hardway after breaking a sensor that removal of the BU switch is best... the others didnt seem affected but that one will get absolutely battered by the tunnel during installation if you dont pull it. It isnt hard to get back in once the tranny is hooked up, just need a good wrench.

As for filling the tranny and diff, my brother is a tool dealer and he had a pump with a long clear tube on it... I would suck the oil up out of the can and then push/pump it into the tranny/diff... took about 20 minutes to do both and all was well.

Interesting....I've done about 3 FD clutch jobs back in the day, never had to remove the sensor or had a problem with it interfering during the reinstall. Again, this was a few years back, so my memory might be fuzzy. But, the tranny went in no problemo.
