Installing Harnesses
 

I have some new Schroth harnesses to install, and plan to use the stock lap belt mounting locations for the lap belt portion of the harnesses.

The outboard mount is easy to access, but the inboard mount is on the seat.

At first glance it appears I need to remove the seats to access this mount. I can't see the bolt that attaches the stock lap belt receiver.

Q: Is removing the seat really necessary to do this, or is there something I am missing here?

Thought I would ask first, as my natural tendency seems to be to remove more than necessary when making mods on my car. When that happens I usually see where whatever I am trying to get at would have been accessible with a little less work.

The inboard or seat buckle slides on a metal bar that is secured by a 17mm hex-head bolt toward the rear of the tranny tunnel under a flap of carpet. No need to remove the seats.

These will be bolted to an RaceShop (M2) harness bar.

While that may be true on your car, it is not on mine.

The buckle portion slides with the seat. The seats and belts are 100% stock.

Yes my buckle slides with the seat but you should see that the assembly is eventually secured to the tranny tunnel just before the rear bins, again under a carpet flap (item circled in RED on attached picture. The Driver's side is a MIRROR image of this passenger side).

BTW: does it have an anti-submarine belt ? If so, be sure to use a large plate to secure the eye-hook to the floor-boards so it doesn't rip-through the thin metal . . .

No, these are 4 pt harnesses using Schroth's ASM loop. This is a loop sewn into the inboard shoulder harness, with a plastic casing around it. On impact the loop will separate, allowing the harness to act just enough like a conventional 3 pt that the lap belt will stay put.

I finally installed the Schroth harnesses today.

After spending a few minutes looking at the previous posts in this thread, the manual, and looking around behind the seats, I decided to just take out the seats.

Removing the seat from the FD is fortunately very easy.

As you can see from the photos attached, there is no way to attach the harness without removing the seats.

In the first picture you can see that there is a plate secured by three bolts. Inside the circled portion you can just see the bolt that is securing the seat belt. This cannot be removed without removing the seat.

The second picture shows the same area with the plate removed.

Q: What needs to be done to disable the seat belt switch on the driver's side? I haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet, just hoping someone here already knows.

It may be as simple as putting a jumper on the connector, but I do not know if it is just connected to a simple switch.

Are you going to use those harnesses on the street? Wearing a harness in a car without a rollbar/cage is a bad idea in a situation where you could roll/flip the car. I would only use those for auto-x.

Minimal street use. I took out the drivers side belt just because I don't want to deal with it.

Street use will be mostly to break in the new motor.

Cool, I was digging around and couldn't find an answer quickly to your seatbelt question. I know I've seen it posted on the forum before.....

I've searched and found nothing.

Just took a look at the wiring diagrams, but cannot find the seat belt switch.

I'm going to put the ohmeter on the switch connectors and plug in the belt. If I get < 1 ohm, it's just a switch and I can put a jumper on it.

If > 1 ohm, I'll put a resistor on it.

I just ran a test on the switch.

It is normally closed.

When the seat belt is buckled, the switch is open.

Apparently unplugging the connector will tell the ECU that the belt is buckled.

When the battery is back in the car I will verify that.
