Im about to buy a 3rd gen, how do they sound and perform???

well about to get an 3rd gen R1 but i was wondering how do they sound. ive been to a few shows and seen them but not actually running and WOT.

theres not many FDs in my part of VA. i used to have an ZEX accord running 14.3 in the quarter mile, and i liked the way the intake sounded when i let it loose. i had a greddy evo exhaust which wasnt loud at all.

so is there anyone have sound clips or movie clips of the way the run and sound. a couple of movie clips i see the rx7 being really loud.

let me know guys!!

Ok. For starters I suggest you read the Sticky for Newbies. That will get you pointed in the right direction in terms of maintenance, etc. Seriously, read this entire 3rd gen area (and definitely use the search function) to know what you are getting into.

The RX-7 will do circles around an Accord no matter what. It is a different beast.

Sound mean depending on what aftermarket exhaust you put on it.

blackscorpio 06-25-02 01:57 PM

running a single turbo with open wastegate aslo gives you a totally different kinda sound :)

I love the way my pettit sounds. Everyones first comment about my car is damn that exaust note is deep for an import.

If you got the ballz, you can always get a custom Borla XR-1 to be installed. They also give it a nice mellow tone, and are more freeflowing than anything else out there.

I have the apex'i dual N1 catback with a downpipe. I like the way it looks and most people that come in my car say how good it sounds.

How do they sound? hehehehe...

They sound like a big fast jet plane...or maybe a big army tank, or even a civic with a V8 in it...

hehehe

they sound how ever you want them to sound......

That was a funny question.....:D

JONSKI 06-26-02 06:44 PM

Go with a V8 if you want a mean sounding car. Go with a 3rd gen if you want raw power and acute handling.
Remember: A piston engine goes "boing boing" and the Mazda engine goes "mmmmmm".

Heh jonski, I actaully have that commercial ripped from somewhere on my computer in .wmv format.

Stock they are very quiet. As a rule of thumb the more open the exhaust, the more it sounds like a chainsaw. I used to have an N1 duel and love how it looks, but it was much louder/low quality sounding than the Power extreme I'm currently using-also boost didn't drop by any noticeable amount with the switch. -only downside is the PE is ugly.

:) When I get the time I wanna make the "mmmmm" sound my windows start-up sound and I wanna make the "boing-boing" my error sound. :)

I met a few guys that own FD's and live in your area. They also work on them and seem to be pretty knowledgable. PM me and I can give you their e-mail address. I don't think any of them hang out on the forum.

don't mean to flame or anything. But are you seriously saying good exhaust sound is one of the factory when you buy a car or not??

I would understand that if you worry it's too loud. but stock exhaust system is not loud at all.

kwikrx7 06-26-02 11:11 PM

The stock rust-bucket exhaust is very quiet. As soon as you start messing with the exhaust it will get noticeably louder. The Apexi GT and N1 dual exhausts are the some of the loudest exhausts out there. My car is pretty loud running non-seq. even with the hi-flo cat. If noise bothers you then stay away from midpipes. A downpipe and a decent exhuast will provide a deep sporty tone. Stock FDs run 13.5-14.0 in the 1/4 so ti will be very noticeable over your Accord.

Look into the PFS--combined with my dp and high flow cat, I love it. Sounded good with a mp, too :)

One of the few good things around associated with that guy....

wait a minute... the RX7 sounds dumb... I'm sorry but they sound stupid when you open them up (open up the exhaust, that is)... I have radio controlled air planes that sound better. Hell, I could record a gas powered weed-whacker and an RX7 and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I mean really... how many times have you heard someone comment on how much an RX7 and a chainsaw sound alike... it's very similar to a two stroke motor & sounds that way.

granted, with the right cat-back and some sort of a cat still in place, you can manage to get a descent sound, but still nothing to write home about.
They do have a very distinctive sound, but when I think of a cool sounding car, I don't think about anything with rotary power.

.. now, as far as performance goes - think of the best performing car you've been in that came from Japan, then add a couple nothces and you've got the RX7. It's the best performing car to hit our shores from the west, hands down.

now go read the sticky, download the shop manual, and buy some hand tools. ;)

it's really sad to read that you are going to buy a car based on the things you've asked....

RX7_Fast_Lane 06-27-02 10:32 AM

haha, i second that

Ya, you should be more worried about color, at least that has an affect on performance :D

Sorry, I don't know what came over me.....
