Ignition Guru's need Help, Q on Shielded wire

Most of the ignition wiring on my r is toast, breaking off, shorting itself, ect. ect. So I am going to be doing some rewiring this weekend. I could probably get by with out asking questions but there is a specific wire that is puzzling me. My question is on the coil pack wiring. Each coil pack has two wires for each plug. One for the power in (from the ignitor), and one for the power out (exiting the coil pack). Next on one of the two wires in each coil pack, there is a shield wire on it. Each shield wire has braided wire in it that comes out and connects to each other. In other words all three shield wires connect together and onto a ground point. Anyhow my question is does that shielded wire have a purpose, what is the point of that wire if the coil packs are grounded? Here are some pictures of what I am dealing with hopefully to give you some insight.
Thanks again for your help guys.

ps. the illustration above may not be exactly correct, I just copied off the manual. And from what the manual shows it appears that the exiting power goes to the ground.. Makes no sense...
