Ignition coil setup
 

I need some serious help. I just bought a Crane Cams HI-6 and two LX91 coils. My question is how are the stock coils triggered? The black/red wire is a 12v switched. Does the other wire trigger the coil? And is it a positive trigger or negative trigger? Anyone that has an HI-6 please help me. Or anyone that has any ideas please help me.

I do have a voltmeter. One wire is switched 12v. I cant get a reading on the other wire. My hi-6 is not working. I need some help on this one guys.

Ok, the hi-6 is not getting a signal from the wires off the igniter to the coil. Are there more parts that I need other than just the hi-6?

Would anyone out there with a hi-6 and aftermarket coils or stock coils please send me a pm on the setup. I have searched extensively on this issue. Thanks.

There are two reasons nobody is helping you. First is that you need some patience. Give people time to read your message. We aren't all connected to this forum 24/7. Next is that very few people upgrade the coils because there is no point. Even the most extreme setups normally do just fine with stock coils. This begs the question, why are you doing this? Perhaps you would be better served by exploring the answer to that question than asking how to put in the coils... In other words, what goal are you trying to reach by doing this?

Two leading coils have crapped out on me in the last year. A new coil is $300+ depending on where you look. I searched about some ignition setups and a lot of people seemed to be running an hi-6 with lx coils. I thought since this is cheaper, and more powerful, it would be a good option. So, I am still looking for an answer to my original question. Thanks.

The coils are triggered by the igniter, which gets a 0-5V on/off signal from the ECU. The igniter grounds the coils for a fraction of a second, it will be too fast to monitor with a DC voltmeter. You might get a reading in AC Volts mode, but I can't tell you exactly what the reading should be, because the AC meter isn't built to read that sort of signal. It won't be zero, though.

Sounds like you have another problem if you are blowing so many coils. Are you running an ignition amp other than the twin power?

As for the price I just bought a new leading coil after 140 miles for $107. Where the heck are you getting yours?

Scotty, thanks for your help. That does help me a lot. So you have 12v to one wire and the other wire, when triggered, grounds the coil. I am not running another ignition amp. I just bought the hi-6 and the two coils. I still dont know how to hook up the hi-6 with our type of ignition. I dont know where I saw $300 for a coil. I did see a new one on mazdatrix for $173. Thanks again.

Hmmm, no amp huh? Well that is strange. I still don't think switching to a different coil setup is the answer. There must be some problem with the car, though I have no idea what. I'd suggest having a pro look at it. Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck.

As for the stock coil I got mine from MazdaComp. Ray at Malloy could probably get one for a good price too.

My car's ignition system is pretty stock, so that's about as much as I can help you.
