idle problem

when i drive my car around town it seems to run fine. when i stop at a stoplight it idles fine but it seems that on hot days when the motor may get hotter than normal when ever i stop at a stop light it will die not all the time just some times. i tried adjusting the idol with the idlo screw but it just idols at about 1200 rpms and it still dies... my mods are on my sig.
thank u

papsmagu 08-21-05 07:30 PM

does it smoke alot.......if so what color is the smoke?
is the car hard to start? does it stat right up?
have you tested the compresion on the motor

have you tried searching.

i guess what i'm trying to say is that if you want any useful answers to your question, you must be alot more desriptive. its hard enough to diagnose a problem with FD's in person, let alone over the internet.

technonovice 08-21-05 09:36 PM

Adjusting the idle screw to "correct" a high idle usually just masks another problem which likely a vacuum leak.

*RX007* 08-22-05 05:39 PM

no my car doesnt smoke and it starts up fine... i havent compression tested it yet but it didnt do this about a mont and a half ago before i got my parts... they were all instaled at once and and before that the car was stock.

I had that problem too. Changing the plugs and wires and cleaning out the throttle body with carb cleaner fixed it.

kraked 08-22-05 06:23 PM

what is vtown, by the way?

*RX007* 08-23-05 07:01 PM

well the plugs and wires were just changes but ill try and clean the throttle body... v town is vacaville its in between sac and san fran and near fairfield and its like 15-20 mins from davis

iron4jones 08-23-05 09:27 PM

I would check your vaccum hoses too. Start simple and work your way up to more complicated things. More than likely it will be something small.

ohh sweet, i go to the vacaville costco all the time.... there are so many cities that start with V, so i was just wondering.

Hey, lets say you are at a stop light after you've warmed up your car completely (that is if it didnt already stall).... If you then blip your throttle, will your rpms drop real low, and your engine dies/almost dies?

thats what my car was doing and the throttle body helped it. also, if you want to take it to a mechanic near by, look up Mazda Plus in sacramento, off of florin. My car is there right now for an oil leak. Its a family business and the owner there is real nice and knowledgeable about rotaries.

no it doesnt do that but some times when im stoped there it will idle extremely low for a second and come back up and other time it just dies... but this problem doesnt happen very often

kraked 08-26-05 12:29 AM

that sounds exactly like what I had and all I did was change plugs, wires, and clean out the throttle body real nice (w' some carb cleaner and some scrubbing)... since you said your wires and plugs are new, definitely give the throttle body cleaning a try and let me know how it goes.

Bad_Karma7 08-26-05 12:05 PM

Mine's doing the same thing. I notice that my alternator voltage sometimes drops to 13.1 when it's hot; 14.1 in the morning when I first start the car. Let me know if you figured out why it's doing this.

*RX007* 08-30-05 07:16 PM

ok so i cleaned the throtle body and for some reason that was a big pain in the ass cause after i got the elbow back on something was in the way and i had a giant boost leak so i tried to tighten it further and snaped the stud in half... luckly it can still screw in. so after i got that on in the process i accedentaly unpluged a vacum hose and when i went to start it it ran like crap so i thoght i broke it... i finaly found the house and i took it for a drive, it drove well but it was about 9 pm. so today i was driving and it started to die and i thought that i had fixed the problem but i guess not. when i pulled up to a friends house it started to die again at that time i had turned of the a/c and the car recovered, i noticed that and turned the a/c on and the car stared to die again then i turned it off and yet again it recovered. so it only dies when the a/c is on... so thats the problem now and i definetly dont know what to do now.

kraked 08-30-05 07:44 PM

hey man, you are describing the exact same problems as what I had. You mentioned that your plugs are new.... how new are they? Are you running 9s, do you idle a lot? They may have fouled already.

Did the throttle body cleaning improve the car a little? You may need to reset the ecu after the cleaning so the car can relearn all the air flow crap.

they were replaced in july at rotary extreme... i have no idea if they 9's i would have to ask chuck. the only time i idle is when im at a stop light or stop sign and also when i let my car cool down...other than that im always drivin around at abont 2300 rpm's arond town. i think the cleaning did help, as i was cleaning i noticed alot of grease coming out. i also dont no how to reset the ecu

kraked 08-30-05 07:59 PM

you reset the ecu by disconnecting the negative terminal from your battery.... go in your car and push the brakes for a few secs then leave the car alone for like 5-10 min and reconnect the terminal to the battery..

im sure RE does good work and plugs should last longer than a few months.. but if resetting the ecu doesnt help, I would pull the plugs and look at em.

I had exactly the same dumb ass problem and I went through so much shit!!!~~~ and guess what it was!!!~~~ it was the TPS sensor!!!~~~ the tps wasn't broken it just need to be readjusted. Even though the voltmeter says its on the right reading try unscrewing the tps sensor and just readjust it again....
After that walla!!~~~ the car stoped dieing!!~~~ try that for a change~~

kraked 08-30-05 08:03 PM

Yeah, good call, give the TPS a try

*RX007* 08-30-05 08:05 PM

dont wanna sound like a newb but what and where is a tps sensor

akiratdk 08-30-05 08:16 PM

On the back of where your throttle butterfly's are.... you can see it right on the back where the throttle cables are connected. There is a black plastic device that is connected to some wires.... and it has two screws... one on the top and one on the bottom..... there is a thread around here on how you can adjust it. Search and try that out.... for me... it really worked... and also I had the same problem as you did.... man at times it was embarassing.... hehehehe.

*RX007* 08-30-05 08:38 PM

ill give that a try... thanx

riptor 08-31-05 01:43 AM

ok...kinda the same issue...it died on me once...at taco bell...lol.( in the drive thru).
now i just changed the plugs like 4 months ago...so just to be positive of my next course of action...clean TB, change wires, and or, adjust TPS? just making sure..

kraked 08-31-05 02:09 AM

TPS would definitely affect idle/stalling. I didnt do tps tho, my plugs were due at the time and i did plugs and cleaned the TB, that helped my idle a lot, no more stalling

riptor 08-31-05 09:39 AM

ok ill look in to wires this weekend..(payday :D) and to clean the TB, just a take the elbow off and spray carb cleaner down there or take it off the UIM..?
thanx guyz..
