OK..

I might start making one if no one's going to.
Let me know how many of you are acturally interested in getting a custom duct made.
I have a Greddy stock mount now and need one also.

Enough interest, I'll be more motivated to make it quicker.

FG - $200 ish and CF - $300??

nice design, I have the RE Amemiya SMIC, the core size is the same as greddy, just the end tanks are rounder. Count me in for the CF one, I need a better air duct as well.

Travel hasn't let up for me yet! I can send you the design files I have done so far (it's a starting point at least ;)). PM if your interested.

Oh yeah... I'm interested as well in a duct as well, since it will probably be Christmas before I can even start (the way my travel schedules been lately).

I'm in for a FG unit @ $200.

What I was thinking about doing was take the stock IC duct and build about it to fit greddy stock mount ic. Then make a mold and replicate.

I'll start on it next weekend.. I'm going out of town this weekend and I been trying to put together my motor. My blk FD's been down for a year and now i need to get it running again..

legal-z 08-22-05 08:22 PM

i'm in for a fg one. i'm subscribed to this thread, so just post when you start work so i can check back when you need a final count or $.

In the event you decide to make out of abs... I work for a plastic manufacterer....

I can get as much of any color you need. It comes in pellet form and is used for mold injecting purposes.

if this is what you need, let me know.

I can get Black, Red, Blue, grey etc.

We make for many automotive applications and appliance use.

just let me know.

I'm very interested at around 200,00$ bucks!PM me!

WaLieN 09-12-05 10:35 PM

Very nice design! I'd like to see how this whole thing pans out.

Julian 09-23-05 06:21 PM

I will get back to offering CF ducts later in the fall after this hurricane crap, 100+ deg weather and all, check my thread for photos.

I'd like to see you offer it in a less exotic material (plastic) to possibly reduce the cost/bling factor.:)

:bigthumb: If that is possible, I'm in for it!

arutha 09-27-05 06:18 PM

I'd be in for $200 or less this is a much needed part.

wrx19 10-14-05 08:15 PM

I am in for $200. If this can be done within the next week or two?!?!

I wouldn't hold your breath.:rlaugh:

RE Suzuki 10-29-05 01:00 PM

Did you finish making them yet? :p:

primerGrey 10-30-05 01:23 AM

I would buy one too, and suggest fiberglass as the material.

I currently have a Pettit duct (that I recently bought on this forum), a stock airbox with the cheap bastard mod, a stock-size battery, and a Koyo radiator.

The Pettit duct (given the info in an earlier post on this thread, it must be an older version no longer available) is pretty good, but you lose about a column of the SMIC since the duct isn't quite wide enough. My first try at install had the SMIC intake pipe too close to radiator pipe (causing the radiator hose to split just as I pulled in at the end of the day at Thunderhill.... whew!), so beware of that. It also took me a while to get the Greddy at the right height, so I could close hood. To avoid both these problems, anyone playing with this should be smarter than me and be sure to do the first fitment with the silicone couplers installed.

I pushed the duct as far toward the battery as possible, and cut away some of the fiberglass front internal bumper on the battery side to keep it from blocking airflow into the duct when in this position. The inlet of the Pettit duct also sagged a bit in the middle, so I shimmed it out as much as possible with a shaped piece of delrin. I don't know if this sagging was a result of the original Pettit mold process, or if the fiberglass just aged that way over time.

I wonder if the intake area for the IC could be increased by cutting away more of the fiberglass bumper assembly? It seems like duct intake area must be the limiting factor for SMICs...

i think it has become plainly apparent that this fabrication will not happen any time soon if at all. i ended up having a metal duct fabbed for me by a friend. it's not that hard to do for you guys who really want this on their car in the near future.

TwinTurbo_SE7EN 10-31-05 12:32 PM

I am going to do it as soon as a forum member sends me their Greddy SMIC for me to make a mold and start pumping them out. :) should be sometime in mid November.

primerGrey 10-31-05 05:21 PM

Ahh, thank you.

I need my IC, though. Sorry.

One other thought about the design. Perhaps the mold should be done in two pieces. The first piece should be the snout. It would bring the air through the available opening, contain the upside-down U-bend, and provide a mounting surface for the rest of the duct. The value of having this piece separate is that it is not SMIC specific, and could be sold separately to assist in building a duct for any weird SMIC. It also would contain most of the compound curves - the hard part to fabricate at home.

The second piece would be the SMIC-specific portion - the duct itself. Different versions could be done for differnent SMICs. Alternately, this portion could be more easily built at home using planar sections (e.g. sheet metal).

An even crazier idea - I wonder if someday this forum could ever support a sort of group design-and-buy, where people pooled funds to get simple new things like this duct developed. Such a project would need to be organized by a respected fogie (opposite of newbie), since it would involve handling cash. In this case, everyone could pitch in X dollars to help cover prototyping costs.

TwinTurbo_SE7EN 10-31-05 06:08 PM

That would be a good idea. I already have a volunteer to send me his Greddy. It will just be a few weeks before he is able to. I already have a group buy for the XSPOWER intercoolers and will have a group buy for the Greddy duct as soon as I get the mold made.

93silverbullet 10-31-05 09:26 PM

I look forward to it and trust me when I say "I'll be of the first inline to buy it".

My travel schedule this year has really sucked. Hell, I only got to drive my car 4 or 5 times all summer!

Again my apologies for not having the time to follow through with this idea. Who knows... Christmas is coming!

primerGrey 10-31-05 09:52 PM

One other thing. It IS possible to get the Greddy to fit with the stock airbox and battery, although it is very tight. It is clear Greddy designed it to be the largest possible SMIC that would meet these requirements.

Anyway, taking the extra time to make sure the new duct supports the stock airbox and batt would maximize the number of customers, and would give the Greddy SMIC some reason to exist now that the XSPOWER SMIC is available for so cheap. Hint, hint...

This is so cool that I'm putting in my order for the XSPOWER duct without even owning that SMIC! I'll just keep it around in case I want to upgrade someday.

What is worng with you! Next updgrade should be V-mount! Not xspower :nono: (I hope I'm not starting anything for bring in the v-mount topic here.... :tonque: )
