I smell fuel.

I JUST finished putting my engine and accessories back together and the car is running GREAT. Except one little thing.....
I smell fuel when on high throttle and at the secondary turbo. So basically I smell it when it's on boost.
I checked all the fuel lines and there isn't a leak or split in any of the lines. Is there somewhere I'm overlooking to check? ANY help is appreciated.

Thanks guys

Most common failure point on the fuel system in the FPD. I've also read that sometimes the charcoal cannister goes bad and will smell of fuel. Check the FSM on testing thhe charcoal cannister. The FPD is something that should be replaced if you've never done it.

Check your injector O rings I learned the hard way but I cant really get blamed for it I couldn’t find where the smell was coming from two other shops didn’t ether and the Mazda dealer didn’t ether until it cot I mean on fire. LOL so yea check your O ring

Quickly before your car cooks itself.
Jumper the fuel pump to on and make sure 100% there are no leaks from anywhere in the system. This may mean taking some things apart but better then having no car.

Cheers

If you are certain the fuel smell is only on boost, then in all likelihood the leak is at the secondary fuel rail. You may not have one of the insulators in correctly. The insulators seal at the point where the injector ports of the secondary fuel rail seat into the ports on the side of the LIM. Pressurizing the fuel system will not produce a leak at this point. However, pressurize the system anyway to be sure that there is not some other source of the leak.

I just replaced some of the clamps on the fuel lines and there is no smell of fuel anywhere near the intake manifold. I can only smell it when I drive the car and get into boost.

^^And that is the only time you will smell it if it is leaking as I described. The fuel is spraying out through the gap between the fuel rail and the LIM at boost. You see, the secondary fuel injectors only operate under boost. They supply the extra fuel to maintain an adequate fuel/air ratio at boost. Consequently, when they do spray and you have a leak at the juncture as described you will smell fuel while driving the car. By the time you get stopped and stick your head under the hood, the sprayed fuel has dissipated. I had this same problem and I am fairly certain that is the source of your fuel odor.

^^^ Sorry for sounding ignorant but I was trying to make sure that's what you're saying (double chekc). I think this is the issue. I'll check it out.

Thanks SOOOO much. I'll post my findings.

^^Don't feel ignorant, it is not a simple system.

Oh I know. The whole engine/trans were in pieces a month ago and I put it all in myself. I know a TON more about this car now. Still don't know everything.....yet.

i'm just curious.. can you smell gas in your oil?

DRTHVDR 04-25-07 09:41 PM

Nope....Oil is nice and clean.

I have the same problem, I ordered a new PCV Valve (I think, its the Aluminum check valve) since mine was no longer worked, I heard that it may be a cause of the fuel smell under boost problem. If you don't figure it out, I'll let you how it turned out.

Just wondering if the check valve or the FPD fixed your problems since I'm having the same probems
