i need a real strong answer

ok..i own an fd, i know the minor things there is to know about rx7s, i had a 87 t2 about a year and a half ago, im not noob but something has been bothering me..

now i know the differences between an r1 and touring, pep, base model and whatnot but what i dont understand is that how can an rx7, 93 with leather seats have the rest of the r1 features.. is that possible? did somewhere along the production of the 93 r1's did they just throw some leather seats in some of them? the owner claims he didnt do any modifications to the car except for a boost gauge and an air/fuel gauge, and exhaust, nothing more..

reason asking cause my friend wants to purchase an fd too, i went to see the car with him.. its a 93 "r1" supposedly with leather seats, now it does have twin oil coolers, the factory front strut tower bar, no sunroof, no cruise control and the factory bose stereo system.. the seller told him its an r1 but im thinking, hey, it has leather seats.. is that possible?

ijneb 03-02-04 08:57 PM

I believe you could talk to a dealer and have things custom ordered.

scratchjunkie 03-02-04 08:58 PM

possible not probable

1QWIK7 03-02-04 09:02 PM

lol now im confused

maybe there is a chance that the first owner had some alterations before the pickup of the car..

but what are the chances of that?

ok now second semi noob question..

now a touring has a sunroof and leather seats, can it have leather seats and no sunroof? or vice versa?

cause im thinking its prob a touring version with no sunroof.. but what about the other r1 features, it even has an r1 rear and front spoiler...

i think ijneb is right..

scratchjunkie 03-02-04 09:14 PM

fd is a fd, it got dual oil coolers so its a plus. if you really want to know i would pull the vin numbers and take that to a dealer with your question. but i could tell you that tourings were the most expensive model when they were new.

tt2323 03-02-04 09:29 PM

I'm with scratchjunkie here...there are more important things on the car to concerned about

1QWIK7 03-02-04 09:45 PM

no i know about that, well my friend knows, i hope..

wont you be a little concerned if you were buying an fd and a little confused of what model it is at first? before anything else...

i mean the guys says one thing, it looks another, then both at the same time, now you're confused..

nevermind, i emailed some mazda tech with the vin, hopefully he can figure out what it is..

thanks

Stick or automatic? The "second oil cooler" might be the AT cooler.

Does it have a rear wiper?

1QWIK7 03-02-04 10:48 PM

no its a 5spd so its not the at cooler and it does not have a rear wiper.. it has "ALL" of the r1 features except for the seats.. the seats are leather..

im almost convinced that the original owner special ordered leather seats when he bought the car..

o well

cloud9 03-02-04 11:25 PM

my friend bought his R1 and it came with leather seats, the original owner had it ordered that way

novadan67 03-03-04 11:33 AM

I thought that the R1s did not have a bose stereo. I have a touring w/ bose, so I am not sure about this one. That would be 2 things that don't make sense (leather and bose). I agree with the others that there are more important things to consider, unless you are preserving the car as a stock collectors item. In that case I would be concerned.

pito13b 03-03-04 11:40 AM

I also think it had to do with the dealers. What about stock chrome wheels?

I was about to jump on that. R models don't come w/ the bose stereo (weight is the enemy lol). Like you said, no sunroof, no cruise control, check if the oil coolers are original, check if it has tilt/adjustable steering wheel (R models do NOT have that). Strut bar doesn't mean jack. You can buy 'em. The seats, I've heard of ONE R that had that...he posted about it on the forum a while back, and he said the only way he got that was because it was a 1995 R2, sales were down, and the dealer was gonna do anything to sell the car. So other than that, it's highly unlikely (given you're talking about a 93 R1). Also, like other ppl said, 5sp, no rear wiper...and take the car for a test drive. The R1 suspension is stiff as hell...even compared to the softened R2 suspension. But the difference between the R1 suspension and the touring suspension should be like night and day. You'll either feel EVERY bump and deformity on the road, or you wont.

Now what's this about stock chrome rims? Uhh..no way buddy. R models didn't come w/ bling. Just performance factor.

This is a long shot, but see if the guy has pics of the car from back in the day. Stock R models had 225s Pirelli P-Zeros all around.

FDNewbie 03-03-04 12:35 PM

stupid double post...

stupid quadruple post...

Actually, I thought some CYM R1s came with chrome wheels, stock or an option.

I have also heard that a few R1s were ordered with leather.

If that's the case, then I stand corrected (the leather thing)

As for the chrome wheels, that's simply news to me. I know it wasn't the case for R2s...

But what I really wanna know about those chrome rims isn't if it's right or not...it's WHY?!?!

NukeGenius 03-03-04 01:41 PM

Who cares? If it has what you want buy it. Its just as fast and all that stuff you may want to redo later anyways. Get what options you consider important and the rest are goodies. There isn't much of a price difference nowdays.

pito13b 03-03-04 04:54 PM

Not sure if its right, but my touring had stock chromes and my dad just got a CYM with stock chrome.

1QWIK7 03-03-04 05:38 PM

thanks guys

and i understand everything you are all saying.. i know it doesnt matter but it serves a purpose to know.. lets say you want to put your car on the net, or your own site for instance.. what are you gonna put down? 1993 mazda rx7 "i dont know"??

i know there are ALOT ALOT of more important things to look at when buying an rx7.. believe me, i know.. but knowing what model it is, is necessary..

and im sorry if my previous posts were vague.. let me explain everything in full

def has twin oil coolers
no rear wiper
5spd
factory strut bar
alloy wheels
when i said bose, not sure if the name was bose, all i know is that the radio was cheap looking that only played cassettes (it was at night)
no cruise
no sunroof
not sure about the tilt steering wheel
no power seats, on neither

and the mystery... the leather seats!!

and the test drive was rough, the car was lowered but even though, felt like driving a vette, its kind of a hard ride..

anyway, i'll just accept it has an r1, has everything of an r1 anyway..

thanks

I believe you couldn't. You could get accesories like a rear wing, R1 lip, etc. Other than that like most Japanese manufacturers you can't custom order cars with specific options. They build them, when they build the one you want (CYM R1, silver Touring w/red leather, etc) then they deliver it to that dealer.

No R1s came with stock wheels chromed from the factory, it was a dealer that took the wheels and got them chromed. Dealers do a lot of things like that. I know a Dodge dealership was added some of those "4x4" stickers from Ford on Dodge trucks and selling it as a off-road package. Becareful listening to what dealers tell you, they will tell you anything to make a sale or not sound stupid.

areXseven 03-03-04 08:34 PM

Seats could have been swaped, ...but then all the other R-1 options could have been installed to make it look like an R-1. The VIN will be the truth teller.
