Ok im coming up on my first oil change (2k miles). I use my FD as a daily driver as of far no problems with the car. Since this is my first oil changed i also got some spark plugs. For the Oil i decided to go with the 10-30 Penzoil (4 quartz) if i need more i'll get it? and I also got 2 leading and 2 trailing plugs NGK R's. I just wanted to know if thats a good oil for my FD and the driving conditions its in (DD) also what do you guys think about the choice of plugs.

any input would be greatly appreciated:D

go with 20/50 oil, brand dosent really matter. 10/30 is too thin for hot weather. ngk's are good plugs, go with stock heat #s.

I was under the impression running a thicker oil would be bad for my car?

I drive the car 30-40 miles a day average m-f maybe a little less can someone explain to me why 20-50 would be better the a 10-30 thanks...

The heat breaks down the oil and makes it thinner.
Thinner oil means lower oil pressure and thats bad.

The thicker oil will keep the oil pressure where it needs to be and will lubricate better. Thats because its thicker to start with so when it gets hot its right at the consistency it needs to be.

Use what the manual says for a stock car. Thicker oil has its dissadvantages, Use what the factory says if its stock.

remeber the factory manual is ten years old. oil has changed a lot since then. i run (and suggest) mobil one 15x50 full synthetic. (it's the stuff with the red cap) also remember that small amounts of fuel will get in the oil and brake it down so it's better to go with the thicker stuff.

Really its changed alot? Fill me in. The weight have anything to do with it? Does less ash content mean to use heavier oil in a stock car now?

Ive heard to go with a 10-30 syn, because its properties are better, I'll let you know once my oil change is soon.

20w50 normal oil and change it out every 2k on the dot. I like to use valvoline racing oil but I think anything will be fine. should take around 4.5 qts depending on what model you have and also only use mazda filters they are the best but kinda small so change the oil often.

you did ok on the plugs but I usually get the platinum ones bur9eqp not sure of a big difference tho

I use castrol 20-50 oil at all times, even in the cold, only because the rotary's produce so much heat and it does break the oil down easy...

just don't get penziol. I could piss in your engine and get better viscosity(spl??). I would use either, mobile1(too expensive though), castrol, or valvoline.

The BS in this thread is thicker than the oil these people put in their cars. :rolleyes: Nothing wrong at all w/ 10W30. I've been using Castrol GTX in that weight for *years*, and have had ZERO problems.

I use valvoline 20w50 syn blend, and you should listen to me because i'm only 50 miles from you. :p:

You may already know but make sure you do the plugs one at a time so the trailing/leading plugs dont get mixed up. :)

10w30 will be fine. 30-40 miles a day most likely will barely get a heavier oil to a good operating temperature.

FYI, I run 10w30 on the street no matter the temp, and then 20w50 for the track days.

Castrol 20w50 here in Orlando. I have used it in all my cars since they were all high mileage. Never had any trouble.

The higher oil pressure you get from higher viscosity doesnt necessarily mean you are doing something good. Higher viscosity doesnt want to flow through all the different openings as freely, sure it keeps the pressure up but do you really get more oil to the paces that need it?
I run Royal Purple or Mobile 1 10w30 year round here in Phoenix and daily drive it all summer.

Thanks for the help guys. Just wanted to let you all know the car had 4 trailing spark plugs? Does this effect anything ? But i got the plug in the right order and also the right plugs 2 trailing and 2 leading. Just curious if the car was effected but just having 4 trailing plugs?

Is 10w40 these days in LA wheather bad for it?

I would recommend against using standard "dino" Pennzoil, as their base oil formulation has a high paraffin content, which isn't the best for the rotary's oil injection lubrication system. Paraffin also has a tendency to create sludge in the oil under certain conditions.

Mobil 10w30 for winter and Mobil 20w50 for summer

no not at all, I have used this weight before when they ran out of 10w30 and it was fine :)

Go with 20/50. taht what TRI poing told me to use!!!. and use 5QT

and since Rotary spin this fast.. use heavey oil did not slow it down much.

TRY to use 15/40 on Z06(been there done that, hight Oil press but slow moving RPM...)


oh for spark plug, make sure you screw in there with hand first and tide it out wiht ranch. you migh damag it if you try to force it in by ranch or socket..

10w30 is fine, but i wouldnt recommend pennzoil it breaks down easy and leaves a yellow residue under the oil cap. but as long as your changing your oil every 2,000 miles and checking it every week you'll be fine. (i use castrol GTX 10w30)

What do you guys use Castrol gtx high mileage 10w30 or just catrol gtx 10w30. Whats the difference anyways. I have 63,xxx so which one should I use?

Forget the "high mileage" oils. They are nothing more than regular oil with a few shear additives/viscosity modifiers added, along with a heavy dose of marketing.

No, its not crap, it is a marketing gimmick. Castrol makes good stuff. Getting people to think they need a high mileage motor for a high mileage car gets them to look only for those oils, which lowers their choices.

Crap would be high parafin content motor oils.
